The White Horses is a 1965 television series produced jointly by RTV Ljubljana (now RTV Slovenija) from Yugoslavia and German TV ( SÃÆ'¼dwestfunk ).

Plotline

The story follows the adventures of a teenage girl Julia (Helga Anders) who leaves Belgrade to spend the holidays at a male ranch run by Uncle Dimitri (Helmuth Schneider), where with the help of the groom's head Hugo (Franz Muxeneder), Lipizzaner white horses raised.

In the first episode, Boris's horse was stolen by gypsies that dye his white coat so nobody knew it. Julia and Hugo set out to find Boris and after healing, a relationship formed between girl and horse.

Serial, called Po? Itnice v Lipici in Slovenian and Ferien in Lipizza ("Holidays in Lipica") in German, consisting of thirteen episodes of black and white 25 minutes.

The dub version was broadcast in England from 1968, and repeated for many years thereafter. The distressed soundtrack was long thought, but audio recordings of twelve of the thirteen episodes have been found.

The UK theme song - written by Michael Carr and Ben Nisbet and then re-dubbed to all versions, is just titled "White Horses", and is credited to "Jacky" - sung by Irish-born Jackie Lee. It became the top 10 hit on the UK charts in April 1968. The Penguin Television Companion claimed it as the best television theme in history. It has been copied and used many times since, including:

• The Big Trixie Red Motorcycle covered the song in their second Peel session in 1983.
• Scottish Boom Boom Girls' group covered the song in 1982 in their Peel Session.
• The Trashcan Sinatras features a version of the song in their EP Circling the Circumference (1990)
• The British band Kitchens of Distinction recorded the theme song cover during the session for what will be their last album, Cowboys and Aliens (1994). The song was first released in the UK as a b-side on the album's first single, "Now It's Time to Say Goodbye"; it was later released in the US as a b-side on the song title
• Morwenna Banks released a cover version in 1995 as an Absolutely , The Little Girl character.
• The Movie Me Without You (2001) uses the "stereo" version of Jacky on the opening credits, and the version by Lucy Street during the final credits
• Cerys Matthews performed the song in the compilation Song for Young at Heart (2007)
• Themes are covered by Dean and Britta on their album Back Numbers (2007)
• This theme is discussed by Andrea Ross on his album Moon River (2007)
