The Mayflower Inn at Manomet Point, Plymouth Massachusetts is a large wooden structure located on a hill on Point Road, with views of the White Horse Beach to the north and Cape Cod Bay and Scokes Pond to the south.. The exterior is similar in design to the Chatham Bars Inn, located in Chatham Massachusetts, which opened in 1914.
The Mayflower Inn opened in June 1917. "This ambitious Colonial-Resurrection Colonial-style building (including the outbuildings) was designed by Boston's architect J. Williams Beal...," Bryant Tolles wrote in Summer By the Seaside: Hotel Beach Architecture New England Coast . These include "a three-story, long, 260-foot-long roof-top building, highlighted by dormant rooftops, paired with gambrel bay, and the verandah extended with a ledge."
This inn is a summer resort for the rich Americans, conventions and politicians of the New England Governors.
The inn is built near the historic Ardmore Inn, formerly the Manomet House, which was founded in the 18th century and is run by generations by members of the Holmes family. "When the Mayflower Hotel was built in 1917, Ardmore Inn was used for relief and personnel homes. When I was a child, it was used for this purpose and for many years, it fell into a state of disrepair," Muriel Holmes Anderson Weeks writes in A Family History in 1975. Ardmore was destroyed in the 1960s, despite local efforts to preserve it.
During the Mayflower Inn's success, "attracted New York customers and dominated life along the shores of the 1950s," according to the newspaper The Old Colony Memorial.
"They really do serve rich people... They have all the cottages along Taylor Avenue and have beach clubs and pavilions.. People will eat in the main hotel and many women will even have fur coats and this is in summer. They even have seaplanes that will fly people. That will run right on the beach. "
"The mighty hotel fell on hard times when the Catskills resorts grew in popularity in the 1960s."
The structure was significantly damaged by consecutive fires in the 1970s. Finally destroyed and replaced by a condo complex.
