Cob Horse Breed Information, Buying Advice, Photos and Facts ...

A cob is traditionally a small horse, usually sturdy, with strong bones, large joints, and a fixed disposition; it is a type of horse body rather than a certain type. Historically, in the UK and, to a lesser extent, the eastern United States, 'cob' might be an ordinary horse used for everyday riding but in the past used to drive a wagon.

This term continues to be used extensively to describe this type of horse in the United Kingdom, but less so in North America. In the United States, the term "tuna" is primarily used to describe the Welsh cob, and in bridle size for horses, designates smaller sizes that not only fit the Welsh cob, but also many Morgans, Arabs, some Quarter Horses, and other horses with triangular short heads.

Characteristics

In general, the cob is bigger than a pony, standing 14.2 hands (58 inches, 147 cm) or taller, but relatively small and compact, usually with a rather short leg. The breed of horses known today as part of the Welsh Dob cob exemplifies the classic building of the cob historic. It is said that a good show should have "the head of a woman and the back of a chef."

Popular uses of cobs include driving, show and recreation rides. Cob breeds have become increasingly popular for Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), as well as for riders looking for responsive horses but with quiet temperament, shorter stature and stable, comfortable echoes.

The English Horse Association Performing Arts (BHSA) rule book, states: "The Cob is of a kind rather than the species: short-legged animals exceeding 148 cm (14. 2 1 /< sub> 2 hand; 58 1 / 2 Ã, in) with the maximum height is 155 cm (15.1 hands; 61 inches), has bones and substance of quality and is capable of carrying considerable weight... Casks should have a wise head, (sometimes roman nose), Eyes are generous, a beautiful neck at the top, with a misty mane and a well-defined runner... The casket should also have a clean, strong grip and all good hunter attributes. "

Show Cobs

The cob show in the UK is overseen by the British Horse Show Association (BSHA), formerly known as The British Show Hack, Cob and Riding Horse Association. The casks are listed in three divisions: light, heavyweight, or Maxi Cob exceeding 155 cm (15.1 hands; 61 inches). The classes in which the cob is displayed also have the same details:

  • Lightweight: horses or candies aged 4 years and over, not exceeding 148 cm (14.2 hours, 58 inches), capable of carrying up to 89 kg (196 lb).
  • Heavyweight Cob: a horse or a 4-year-old horse or more, exceeding 148 cm, but not exceeding 155 cm, capable of carrying over 89 kg (196 lb).
  • Maxi Cob exceeds 155Ã, cm (15.1 hours; 61Ã, inches): to be rated as a cob. Judges should pay special attention to typing (ie short-legged animals of the Cob type). Should be shown hogged.

Maxi Cobs is treated somewhat differently from other divisions. The highest placed animals qualify for Maxi Cob finals at the National Championship event. The winners of these classes are not eligible for open cob championship..
