2006 Horse rescue operation
In 2006 following the storm nearly 100 horses were stranded on a small mud island. Finally they were rescued after seven women equestrians organized by Norma Miedema through an internet forum ride through the water and then climbed back leading the horses to a safe place (Susan Fransen riding Blizzard, Micky Nijboer up Berber, Antje Dijkstra up Humphrey, Hinke Lap riding Guinever, Christina Stormer riding Perfeft and Fardow de Rueter on King). A memorial was later established to mark the courage and ingenuity of these women.
