Plot
In February 1966, while on a combat mission, Lieutenant Dieter Dengler, a German-born US Navy pilot in the VA-145 squadron, flying from the USS Ranger, was shot down at Douglas A-1 Skyraider over Laos. He survived the accident, only arrested by Pathet Lao. Dengler was offered waivers by the provincial governor, if he would sign a document condemning the Americans, but he refused. Dengler was tortured and taken to a prison camp. There he met with his fellow prisoners: American pilot Gene DeBruin and Duane W. Martin, Y.C., Procet and Phisit, some of whom have been prisoners for years.
Dengler soon planned to escape, but received only vengeful approval from the others. All suffer from deadly diseases, unhygienic conditions, and harassment by the guards. After a few months the food supply got worse, and they learned that the starving guards planned to kill them and return to their villages, so the prisoners agreed to implement a long-planned plan. It involves escaping through a weakened spot on the perimeter fence, splitting into two groups, circling the perimeter fence in the opposite direction, gathering in the guard hut during lunchtime to overwhelm the guards, and contacting American troops to save.
Because one side of the detainee did not obey Dengler's orders, the escape did not go as planned and almost all of the guards were finally shot. With insufficient equipment and supplies, the prisoners dispersed in the forest. Dengler and Martin form one group, while Gene and Y.C. go together to an uncertain destiny.
Dengler and Martin try to reach the Mekong River to cross into Thailand, creating a raw raft, but are trapped in rapids and waterfalls. After losing their raft, Dengler and Martin were soon discovered by a mob of angry villagers, who killed Martin. Dengler escaped and fled back into the forest, hiding from the chasing villagers. A few days later, he was rescued by an American helicopter. Back in the US compound, he was taken to, Dengler was kept in hospital for a briefing because of the secret nature of his mission. He was visited by several people from his squadron, who secretly took him back to his ship, where he was greeted as a hero by the crew.

Development
Rescue Dawn is based on the true story of Dieter Dengler, a charismatic pilot who was shot down in Laos during a secret ambush mission for the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. A few months after being arrested in 1966, Dengler and other prisoners of war were taken prisoner on July 4 for their mass escape. Prisoners have heard the guards in mid-June are planning to kill them all and return to their villages because the drought has caused severe food and water shortages. POW decided they could not wait longer to escape.
Dengler and fellow POW Duane W. Martin finally escaped from their prison camp into the dense forest. Martin was killed by angry Laotian villagers, but Dengler could continue. Two rescue helicopters rushed to rescue Dengler, dropping the cable to the human figure they saw below. They struck him on the ship, but feared that he could become a Viet Cong suicide bomber, his crew clamped him onto the helicopter floor and searched him. His backpack turned out to contain only half eaten snake. Dengler, exhausted by his ordeal, whispered, "I am an American pilot. Please help me back home."
Herzog Director's interest in human and natural cruelty raised his interest in the 1997 Little Dieter Needs to Fly documentary about Dengler's experience in captivity. He chose to review the story in a cinematic theater version with Christian Bale describing Dengler. Compared to Little Dieter Needs to Fly, Rescue Dawn undermines the suffering of the prisoners, including eliminating some of Dengler's worst tortures. Herzog did not want to glorify the misery of the prisoners, because the film is rated PG-13.
Filming
The main photography lasts for 44 days in Thailand. In preparation for the role, the actors who played the prisoners spent several months to lose weight. Since weight gain is achieved faster than weight loss, the film is taken in reverse, with Bale completely regaining his weight during shooting. The film includes the first major use of digital visual effects in Herzog's career; Dengler's flight shots while the air was created digitally. The accident itself, however, is a direct action.
Music and soundtrack
The original movie soundtrack for Rescue Dawn , was released by the Milan Records label on June 26, 2007. It featured classical music, with considerable cello and piano usage. The score for the film is set by Klaus Badelt. Original songs written by music artist Ernst Reijseger, Patty Hill, Craig Eastman, and Jack Shaindlin, among others, were used on the sidelines of a dialogue throughout the film. Peter Austin edited the music.
Track list :
Historical accuracy
The film depicts six prisoners in the camp, while in real life there are seven. Herzog says that he found scripting to be difficult with seven characters, and that six is ââa more manageable number.
Jerry DeBruin, Gen DeBruin's brother, creates a critical website against Herzog and movies, claiming that some characters and events have been slandered. On the same website, Pisidhi Indradat, who survived another group, also stated that the film contained inaccuracies. The website claims that during his detention, DeBruin taught his cell friends English, shared his food, and even returned after escaping to help his injured cellmate. In the movie, Dengler formulates the entire escape plan, along with handcuff cuffs with nails. According to Jerry DeBruin, the detainees waited for two weeks before informing him of the plan, which had been planned before his arrival.
Herzog admitted that DeBruin acted valiantly during his imprisonment, refusing to leave while some sick prisoners remained. Herzog stated he did not realize this until after the film finished; However, Pisidhi Indradat and Jerry DeBruin stated they made several attempts to meet with Herzog to ensure the accuracy of the film, but to no avail. Herzog states that this aspect of narration may be included if he studies it early. In real life, Dengler speaks English with a heavy German accent that is reduced in Bale's description "to almost zero".
Reception
Rescue Dawn is distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer theatrically in the United States, and by PathÃÆ' à © Distribution, Hopscotch Films and Central Film GmbH in overseas markets. Originally scheduled to be released by MGM in December 2006, but held back for a limited release in the United States until 2007, with full release on July 27 after a limited release in New York City, Toronto and Los Angeles on July 4. The movie's score was written by German composer Klaus Badelt, having previously worked with Herzog in his 2001 Invincible film. Soundtrack was released on June 26, 2007.
Critical response
Prior to running the play, Rescue Dawn generally met with positive critical reviews before an early play in the cinema. Among the main critics in the United States, the film received an exclusive positive review. Rotten Tomatoes reported that 91% of the 162 criticized sample reviews gave the film a positive review, with an average score of 7.5 out of 10. The consensus reads, "Director Werner Herzog once again makes an interesting story about humans versus nature, and Christian Bale really immersing himself in the role of fighter pilot (and prisoner of war) Dieter Dengler. "
Kirk Honeycutt, writing at The Hollywood Reporter, said that the appearance of Bale actor is "the most complex and exciting". He praised the director of Herzog for its use of "fertile forest locations in Thailand, impressive camera work and unobtrusive but powerful musical score" that animates "the story of a man in the desert who fights elements in his own way."
Movie critic Roger Ebert at Chicago Sun-Times called Rescue Dawn , "probably the most trusted film made by Herzog". while crying out, "There is nothing in it that we can not, or not, believe me, I am almost ready to compare it with the classic story of John Huston when I realize it has important differences in the language of Herzog."
In the San Francisco Chronicle, Walter Addiego writes that the film is "an ancient war captives movie that is becoming more and more due to the admiration of writer-director Werner Herzog for the remarkable real-life story of the protagonist, Dieter Dengler". He thinks the director "finds an actor capable of conveying a herzogian hero - a wounded, a saintly fool, a madman, a dream big dreamer - in everyone."
Scott Bowles of USA Today , said the film was "cool and unforgiving and horrible to look at". He declared, "The story of war is no more terrible or separate from Saving the Dawn , and it is a blessing and a curse for the Werner Herzog film."
The film, however, is not without its critics. Rick Groen of The Globe and Mail, felt that, "The odd result, half Herzog and half Hollywood, playing like his own battlefield.Sometimes, his tension is very productive, at other times, everything we get is the worst of both worlds ". Equally unimpressed is Paula Nechak of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, who calls Rescue Dawn a noble effort that can not make itself unique in the saturated genre. He added that the director of Herzog "has covered most of the tropics from the long-delayed action film in his 1997 documentary Little Dieter Needs To Fly." Or, J. Hoberman from The Village Voice , says the movie "rival Apocalypto as forest marathon, has all this and more". He also noted, "Bale even looks really hungry (as in The Machinist). But seeing Dengler's adventure staged does not seem more real than hearing his account - though, as framed and illuminated in such conventional manner, Rescue Dawn is the closest thing to the 'real' movie ever made by Herzog. "
Writing for The New York Times, Matt Zoller Seitz said that "the bottom line does not in fact inject him with allegations of predictability, Klaus Badelt's score can be very firm and a triumphant end - where Dengler is welcomed back to operators with applause and speeches - disappointing conventional ". Overall though, he praised the movie, stating, "'Rescue Dawn' is a miracle: a satisfying genre image that challenges viewer expectations".
James Berardinelli writes for ReelViews , named Rescue Dawn , "Herzog's powerful efforts that genre enthusiasts should actively seek" and noted that "Herzog understood when he made Little Dieter Needs to Fly that the story of a former pilot would be an amazing feature that surprised him for making it so long ago. "Berardinelli also commented that" Christian Bale continues to amaze with his ability and reach. under-40 this year. "There is no role that appears outside of him, and he has worked with some of the best directors of his time."
Describing some of the pitfalls, Elizabeth Weitzman of NY Daily News said there was "a strange emotional breakdown leading to a climactic escape, which can be traced straight to the show". Weitzman, however, quickly admits that "Herzog builds suspense from the beginning, and the film is shot spectacularly." But finally, he was disappointed, saying, "There's a great movie in the Vietnamese story of Werner Herzog, Rescue Dawn." Unfortunately, this is about 30 minutes too long, though the rest is based on adventure truths woven with powerful moments , just towards the end, he will hold you fully in his grip. "
Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post , states that Rescue Dawn is "the original addition to the war movie canon. This is an instant classic form, the most stirred portrait of courage and sacrifice, and cliches subversively ". He believes that "the great portrayal of American heroism and the spirit that can be done has been created by a German film art director known for his much darker vision of obsession is the unquestionable irony, Herzog, finding delicious." He also emphasized how "There is a sense of austerity underlying Rescue Dawn, all the more amazing because it is so rare in Hollywood stories."
Similarly, David Ansen wrote in Newsweek that " Rescue Dawn is a Werner Herzog (and true story) film, and though it's just as loud and interesting as it is with many side-of-films - Hollywood escape movie in your seat, there is one mania about Dieter that makes it different, wild courage that shows the line between courage and complete madness is something thin. "
Michael Phillips, at the Chicago Tribune, however, was not moved by the story. He describes his negativity as saying " Rescue Dawn is Herzog's first English-language scenario, and this is part of the problem: The tacit conversation between prisoners sounds just idiomatic. Also - importantly - Herzog can not find a way to make the final outcome itself feels authentic, even if things happen like this. "Critic Leonard Maltin, writing that" Rescue Dawn "is" Reattaching the Herzog Documentary of 1997 Little Dieter Needs to Fly ". He praised the film, calling it the "edge-of-your-seat POW story".
At Metacritic, which sets the weighted average of 100 criticisms, Rescue Dawn received a score of 77 based on 36 reviews. Critics include movies on their list for 10 of the best movies of the year; such as V. A. Musetto of the New York Post , who called it one of the best films of 2007.
