Life
Poco Lena was heralded in 1949, the daughter of Poco Bueno from Pretty Boy's daughter named Sheilwin. He traced to Peter McCue on both sides of the sire and the side of the dam.
With the American Quarter Horse Association (or AQHA) Poco Lena won the AQHA Championship, the Performance Register of Merit, the Superior Cutting Horse award, and the Superior Halter Horse award. He was also AQHA High Point Cutting Horse in 1959, 1960, and 1961. With the National Cutting Horse Association (or NCHA), he earned a total of $ 99,819.61 in cutting a contest in his career. He earned Certificate of Ability, as well as Bronze and Silver Award with NCHA. He was also inducted into the NCHA Hall of Fame.
In late 1961, Poco Lena foundered. He recovered, and showed well when in October 1962, his owner, B. A. Skipper Jr., died in a plane crash. In confusion, Poco Lena was left in a trailer for four days without food or water. He ran aground again, and never competed again. Finally he was bought by the owner of Doc Bar, Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Jensen. After much care and effort, Poco Lena produced two foals when raised to Doc Bar - Doc O'Lena and Dry Doc, both of whom won NCHA Cutting Futurity. However, Poco Lena's founder deteriorated after the birth of Dry Doc, and on December 16, 1968 he was euthanized.
Poco Lena was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame.
