Philosophy

Lyons's approach to building partnerships between horse and handler is based on the principles of operant conditioning and he encourages owners to pay attention to what happens to their horses and uses consistent cues and encouragement to encourage positive behavior and prevent negative behavior in animals. He places a strong emphasis on the safety of the handler and the horse, using soft techniques, and avoids dramatic results that support setting certain goals, then teaching them by using clear signals, responsible methods, and consistency.

Lyons is somewhat different from other natural rider practitioners because his Christian beliefs play a very public role in his presentation and material. Starting in 2010, Josh Lyons will move east and work in Cross Plains, Tennessee, near Nashville. Father and son both offer a coach certification program to develop a new horse trainer.

Recognition

Awards given to Lyons for his work include the Equitana USA Modern Masters Award for Extraordinary Horsemanship, and the John W. Galbreath Award from the University of Louisville for outstanding contributions to the horse industry. Lyons's son, Josh Lyons, and his daughter Brandi Lyons are also coaches. John and Josh have competed in the invited Road to the Horse competition invitation, John Lyons did so shortly after the knee replacement surgery. Prior to the creation of the annual Road to the Horse competition, Josh Lyons won the "In a Whisper" competition in 2002, a head-to-head head-to-head challenge between himself, Pat Parelli and Craig Cameron, made into a documentary.

Lyons gained support and fame for his criticism of The Horse Whisperer , noting that when there are many positive messages, there is also the potential of people to get some dangerous messages about horse training from several sequences. He first noted that some of the horses that played the Pilgrim were all trained animals and that the film did not represent a real-life time frame to train a real-life animal. He pointed out that the movie makes rehab horse seem to be a one-session event, when in reality it will take quite a while for such a change to take place. Lyons criticized a number of harmful practices shown in the film, and was very critical of scenes in which the main character fantasized, roped, and put the exhausted horse on the ground, then owns the horse owner, a girl with amputated legs, gets on a supine horse, which is then left unchecked. riding, and horses and girls miraculously both recovering from their fears and once again a team of horses and riders. He argues that the real-life real risk of injury to horses and humans in such methods is substantial, that horses pushed into fatigue are not "trained," and encouraging frightened riders in such a way is a misnomer. However, Lyons's critics also acknowledged the limitations of Hollywood filmmaking, stating, "To tell a story, many things are often done that is not wise for a horse owner to try."
