Trailers are powerless vehicles powered by powerful vehicles. This is usually used for the transport of goods and materials.

Sometimes recreational vehicles, travel trailers, or mobile homes with limited living facilities, where people can camp or live are referred to as trailers. In previous days, many such vehicles were trailers that could be hijacked.

United States

In the United States, the term is sometimes used interchangeably with travel trailers and mobile homes, trailers, and production houses designed for human habitation. Their origins are located in a utility trailer built in a manner similar to a horse-drawn cart. The trailer park is the area where the mobile home is housed.

In the United States, trailers ranging from single-axle dollies to 6-axle, 13-foot-6-inch (4.11 m) tall, 53-foot (16 m) semi-long trailer are commonplace. The latter, when coupled as part of a tractor-trailer or "18-wheeler", carries most of the moving goods on the ground in North America.

Trailer type

Some trailers are made for personal use (or small business) with almost all powered vehicles that have decent obstacles, but some trailers are part of large trucks called semi-trailer trucks for cargo transport.

Closed toy trailers and motorcycle trailers can be towed by regular pickup trucks or vans, which generally require no special permission other than regular driver licenses. Special trailers such as open motorcycle trailers, much smaller bike trailers, accessible by small cars, like some simple trailers, pulled by the drawbar and riding a set of axles. Other trailers, such as utility trailers and travel trailers or campers, come in single and double axle varieties, to allow different sizes of tow trucks.

There are also very special trailers, such as genset trailers, pusher trailers and the like that are also used to power the towing vehicles. Others are custom-made to accommodate entire kitchens and other special equipment used by carnival vendors. There are also trailers to transport the boat.

Popular campgrounds use light trailers, aerodynamic trailers that can be towed by small cars, such as the BMW Air Camper. They are built lower than a crane vehicle, minimizing obstacles.

Others range from camping two axles that can be drawn by most of the medium pickup to the trailer during which the host country law allows for drivers without special permission. Larger campers tend to be fully integrated recreational vehicles, often used to pedal a single thrust-driven trailer to allow drivers to carry small cars on their way.

Semi-trailer

semi-trailer is a trailer with no front axis. Most of the weight is supported by road tractors or by a removable front axle assembly known as dolly. A semi-trailer is usually equipped with a leg, called a "landing gear", which can be lowered to support it when it is detached. In the United States, one trailer must not exceed the length of 57Ã, ft 0 (17.37 m) on the interstate highway (except special permission is given), although it is possible to connect two small trailers together with a maximum length of 63 ft 0 ×, 19.20m).

Semi-trailers vary greatly in design, ranging from open wheat haulers through Tautliners to normal looks but cooled 13 × 6 ft. In (4.11 m) x 53 × ft. 0 in (16.15 m) cages ("corals"). Many semi-trailers are part of a semi-trailer truck. Other types of semi-trailers include dry vans, flatbeds, and chassis.

Many commercial organizations choose to lease or rent semi-trailer equipment rather than owning their own semi-trailers, to free up capital and to keep trailer debt to avoid appearing on their balance sheets.

Full trailer is a term used in the United States for shipping trailers supported by front and rear axles and drawn by the drawbar. In Europe it is known as the A-frame drawbar trailer . A full trailer is 96 or 102 in width (2.4 or 2.6 m) long and 35 or 40 feet (11 or 12 m). As per AIS 053, the full trailer is a crane vehicle that has at least two aces, and is equipped with a pulling device that can move vertically in relation to the trailer and control the direction of the forward shaft (s), but which does not transmit statically significant loading to the towing vehicle.

Close-coupled coupler

A near-pair trailer is fitted with a rigid towbar that project from the front and hooks onto the hook on the tractor. It's not a pivot like a drawbar.

Motorcycle trailer

A motorcycle trailer may be a trailer designed to transport a motorcycle behind a car or truck. Such trailers may be open or closed, ranging from trailers capable of carrying multiple motorcycles or just one. They may be specially designed to carry a motorcycle, with a ramp and a tie, or perhaps a utility trailer that is permanently adapted or sometimes to transport one or more motorcycles.

Another type of motorcycle trailer is a wheeled frame with a hitch system designed to transport cargo on a motorcycle. Motorcycle trailers are often narrow and styled to match the appearance of a motorcycle intended to be pulled back. You can get a two wheel version or a single wheeled version. Single-wheeled versions, such as Unigo or Pav 40/41, are designed to allow the bike to have all the normal flexibility of a motorcycle, typically using a universal connection to allow the trailer to lean and spin with a motorcycle. No motorcycle manufacturer recommends that the bike be used to pull the trailer because it creates additional safety hazards for motorcyclists.

Cattle footage

There are a number of different trailer styles that are used to transport livestock such as cows and horses. The most common are stock trailers, trailers that are covered at the bottom, but have openings around the eye level of the animal to allow for ventilation. Horse trailers are a more complicated form of stock trailers. Because horses are usually transported for competition or work purposes, where they must be in excellent physical condition, horse trailers are designed for animal comfort and safety. They are usually ventilated and adjustable windows and suspensions are designed to provide smooth ride and reduce pressure on the animals. In addition, the horse trailer has an internal partition that helps the animals to stay upright during the ride and protect the horse from mutual injury during transit. Larger horse trailers can incorporate additional storage areas for hooves and can even include elaborate residences with sleeping areas, bathrooms and cooking facilities, and other conveniences.

Both stock trailers and horse trailers vary in size from small units capable of holding one to three animals, can be pulled by a pickup truck or even an SUV; to a large medium-sized trailer that can transport large numbers of animals.

Pitching trailer

A trailer hitch, a five-wheeled hitch or other trailer type is required to draw a trailer with a car, truck, or other traction machine.

Ball and socket

A trailer coupler is used to secure the trailer to a towing vehicle. The coupler trailer is attached to the trailer balls. It forms ball connections and sockets to allow for the relative movement between towing vehicles and trailers while pulling uneven road surfaces. The trailer balls are mounted to the rear bumper or to the removable draw bar. The lottery bar is secured to the trailer hitch by inserting it to the obstacle receiver and embedding it. The three most common types of couplers are straight couplers, A-frame couplers, and adjustable couplers. Bumper-pull hitches and draw bars can have a tremendous effect on a crane vehicle making it difficult to recover from a twisting situation.

Fifth wheel and gooseneck

It is available for loads between 10,000 and 30,000 pounds (4.5 and 13.6 t). They are used for larger trailers and provide more stability than traditional obstacles. Both styles have a trailer attached to the coupler mounted on top of the axle inside the crane bed bed like a flat deck or pickup truck. The fifth wheel coupling is also referred to as a kingpin barrier and is a smaller version of the semi-trailer "fifth wheel". Although the fifth wheel and the gooseneck trailer look the same, their method for coupling is different. The fifth wheel uses a large horseshoe-shaped clutch device mounted one foot or more above the crane bed. Gooseneck pair into the spheres 2 / 16 -inch (59 mm) standard mounted on the crane bed bed. The operational difference between the two is the range of movement in obstruction. Gooseneck is very easy to maneuver and can tilt in all directions, while the fifth wheel is intended for the level of the road and side tilt to the side is limited. Gooseneck mounts are often used for agricultural and industrial trailers. The fifth wheel ride is often used for recreational trailers. Standard bumper-hitch trailers typically allow 10% or 15% hitch load while the fifth wheel and gooseneck can handle weight transfer of 20% or 25%.

Jack Trailer

The basic function of the trailer jack is to lift the trailer to a height that allows the trailer to mount or release to and from the towing vehicle. Jack Trailer is also used to flatten the trailer during storage. The most common types of trailer jacks are the A-frame jack, swivel jack, and the drop-leg jack. Some trailers, like horse trailers, have a built-in jack on the tongue for this purpose.

Electrical components

Many older cars take bait for trailer lights directly from the rear taillights of towing vehicles. When ball-checking systems were introduced in 1990, "bypass relays" were introduced. It picks up a small signal from the rear lights to switch the relay which in turn is powered by a trailer lamp with its own feed power. Many electric towing installations, including special vehicle kits incorporate some form of bypass relay.

In the US, trailer lights typically have joint lights for brake indicators and turns. If such a trailer should be connected to a car with separate lamps for turn and brake indicators, a Trailer light converter is required.

Currently some vehicles are fitted with a CANbus network, and some of them use CANbus to connect tow power cords to various systems and security controls. For vehicles that use CANbus to activate a pull-related security system, appropriate interacting wiring devices should be used. Without such towbar cable devices the vehicle can not detect the presence of the trailer and therefore can not activate safety features such as the Trailer stability program which can electronically control the snow trailer or caravan.

The by-pass system is very cost effective but may not be suitable for cars with interactive security features.

Brake

Larger trailers are usually equipped with brakes. It can be electrically operated, air operated, or brake overrun.

Stability

The stability of the trailer can be defined as the tendency of the trailer to remove movement from side to side. Initial motion may be caused by aerodynamic force, such as from wind or passing vehicles. One common criterion for stability is the central location of the mass associated with the wheel, which can usually be detected by the weight of the tongue. If the trailer mass center is behind the wheel, therefore having a negative tongue weight, the trailer will likely become unstable. Another less common parameter factor is the moment of inertia of the trailer. Even if the center of the mass forward to the front of the wheel, a trailer with a long load, and thus a moment of great inertia, may be unstable.

Some vehicles are equipped with Trailer Stability Program which may compensate for incorrect loading.
