feeding bag , feed bag , dinner bag , nosebag , or moral , is bags, stuffed with food, and affixed to the horse's head, allowing it to eat. The main advantage is that only a few feeds are wasted, and this prevents one animal from eating another ration.
Can be made of leather, reed, but more common is a thick cloth or a thin canvas. Some modern designs are made of other durable cordura or nylon, with a solid bottom and a side netting for ventilation.
To access the feed portion near the bottom of the bag, the horse should be able to touch his head to the ground, allowing it to push his nose to the end of the bag.
When the horse uses the bait for the first time, offering it in a hand-held position, without binding it, allows the horse to get used to it. This can reduce the risk of panic horses. Treatment should also be made to adjust the bag to ensure that the horse can breathe easily.
For long trips, plastic bags can be placed inside, allowing them to function as water buckets, with a straps used as a handle.
In the popular US culture, feedbags are used in the phrase "string on old food bags", which means "to eat". This shows that the restaurant will pay little attention to etiquette, and that food will be taken only to satisfy one's hunger. The term is also used in many restaurant names.
