Philip is the given name, derived from the Greek ???????? ( Philippos , lit. "like horses" or "likes horses"), from a combined ????? ( phÃÆ'los , "affectionate", "loved", "loving") and ????? ( hippo , "horse"). In Ancient Greece, horses possessions were only available to those who were wealthy enough to buy them. Thus, "horse lover" can also be understood as "noble". The prominent Philips who popularized names included the kings of Macedon and one of the earliest Christian apostles.

Philip has many alternative spellings, many of them with two Ls (like Phillips, mostly found as a surname). It was also discovered during ancient Greece with two Pss as Philippides and Philippos. It has many small (or hypocoristic) forms including Phill, Flip, Feli, Philly, Lip, Pip, Pep or Peps, and Pippo. There is also a feminine form like Philippine, Philippa. In addition, there are also; Philippe (from the French name, eg Philippe de Gueldres (Philippa of Guelders)).
