Gun Runner is a colt chestnut raised in Kentucky by Benjamin Leon Jr. Besilu Stables. His father is Candy Ride, a horse who grew up in unbeaten Argentina in six career races including four Grade I wins in Argentina and the United States. Although expectations for Candy Ride in his early stud were low, he proved himself to be an excellent son whose descendants included Champion Shared Belief. Gun Runner is the first foal of Quiet Giant, winning several bets from a prominent female family who track down to the Hall of Fame inductee and Gallenette "blue hen". The Quiet Giant is with three times the leading Sire at the Giant Causeway of North America out of the excellent Broodmare Quiet Dance, the Saint John's Year Horse Dam.
The Giant Giant is owned by Edward P. "Ned" Evans during the early part of his racing career. After Evans' death in 2010, he completed his racing career under his estate ownership and was bought by Besilu Stables as a brooding prospect at the 2011 Keeneland sales in 2011 for $ 3 million. Quiet Giant officially retired from racing and grew up in Candy Ride in 2012, which resulted in the birth of Gun Runner at WinStar Farm on March 8, 2013. "He's smart and curious as a young horse, never a lot of trouble and never sick or hurt, "according to Chris Baker, who at that time became general manager of WinStar Farm. Donnie Preston, another WinStar employee, noted that the young Gun Runner had "little fire to him."
Gun Runner was purchased in 2014 by Three Chimneys Farm as part of a package package in which Three Chimneys bought a majority stake in spawning, weanlings and yearlings Besitung. Three Chimney was originally planned to resell Gun Runner at auction as a two-year-old but sell half a flower in a horse for Ron Winchell for an undisclosed price on the recommendation of his bloodstock advisor. David Lambert and Equine Analysis Systems.
Chris Baker, chief operating officer of Three Chimneys, summarized Gun Runner's principal asset: "Pedigree, Conformation, Athleticism, just the way he always brings himself, is very intelligent, intelligent, classy, ââthe horse is easy to move, a kind of scopey and light, who is good - just an athlete... We have a horse stables we want to fill in. He is the kind that has enough attributes on paper, that if he does what we think he can do, he will be in our horse stables. he has not proved us wrong. "

History of the race
2015: Season two years
On September 11, 2015, Gun Runner began his career at Churchill Downs, winning a girls' special weight race over a mile. He followed up with a win in the qualifying race at Keeneland on 17 October. He made his storied race debut on 28 November at Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs. On a muddy track, Gun Runner overcame some traffic issues to lead in stretch heads but then followed and finished fourth.
2016: Season three years
Gun Runner started his three-year campaign on February 20, 2016 at Vulnerable Class II at the Fair Grounds Grounds Competition Arena. With Florent Geroux's new jockey, Gun Runner came in fourth and then started his move at the last corner. He hit the lead in the stretching head then held off a late run from Forevamo to win by half-length. This victory earned Gun Runner 50 points and an early lead on 2016 Road to Kentucky Derby. "He's a very good horse, we're very lucky to have him," said coach Steve Asmussen. "I think Florent gave him a beautiful ride with how the track was played, he showed his talent all the time and it was definitely nice to see him in the winner's circle in a race like this."
On March 26, Gun Runner is back in Louisiana Derby for $ 1 million, also at the Grounds Fair, where he is the third betting option with possibly nearly 4-1. He is behind the slow initial pace, then away in the stretch to win with long 1 / 2 long in dominant performance. "The good thing is that he's very manageable," Geroux said. "He's got a lot of gears, he's really calm, and when you ask him to leave, he has a good foot shift."
At Kentucky Derby 2016, Gun Runner is the third betting choice behind the two-year-old Nyquist, who also won the Florida Derby, and the Exaggerator, who has won the Santa Anita Derby. Gun Runner broke well and ran with Nyquist just behind the fast start speed set by Dazzling Candy. As they step into the stretch, Gun Runner makes his moves and leads. Nyquist then responds and begins to pull away. From far behind, the Exaggerator makes a strong run across the stretch to finish second, with Gun Runner holding out for a third.
With his connections choosing to pass with the last two legs of Triple Crown, Gun Runner back in action on June 18 at Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs. He leads from wire to wire, winning with long 4 / 4 when setting his bet records. The time is 1: 41,12 for 1 1 / 16 just 0.02 seconds off the track record.
The next start saw him face Nyquist and the Exaggerator once again at the 2016 Haskell Invitational Stakes. On a reckless track he ran uncharacteristically from the board race which ended in fifth. He rebounded with a third finish at Travers Stakes, though well behind the winner, Arrogate, who scored a record for 10 furlong with a 1: 59.36 final time. "We met a freak today," Asmussen said. "I think 2: 2 will win it."
On September 24th, Gun Runner was again dealing with Nyquist and Exaggerator at Pennsylvania Derby for $ 1.25 million at Parx Racing. Gun Runner came in fourth behind the fast pace, then swung wide around the far corner to move to second place. Meanwhile, Connect made his move along the tracks and reached the lead in mid-stretch, then stood the Gun Runner's rally to win by half-length.
After the second finish at Cup Dirt Mile, Gun Runner ended his three-year season on November 25 against a powerful old horse field at Handicap Clark at Churchill Downs. When the expected pacemaker Noble Bird broke badly, Gun Runner took over the reins and led from wire to wire for the first class I victory of his career. "I'm very proud of her," Asmussen said. "Walking on it, the horse has confidence in him, he retains his strength and his weight with the thousands of miles that he passes this year at the stage he does."
2017: Four-year season
Gun Runner was grounded during the winter at the Grounds Fair, which was quarantined in January after two horses tested positive for a neuropathogenic strain of the horse herpes virus. The connection from Gun Runner is set to include the horse in the maiden World Cup operation of Pegasus worth $ 12 million on January 28th in what will become its seasonal debut, but Gulfstream Park officials refused to allow him to send to the track despite the negative blood tests as the horse has not been tested for viruses through nasal swabs.
Instead, Gun Runner's seasonal 2017 debut comes in Handicap Razorback Grade III on February 20 at Oaklawn Park. Disconnected as a 1-5 favorite in the field of six older horses, Gun Runner leads out of the gate and is never really challenged to win as he splits through 1 1 soup>/ 16 a mile in 1: 40.97, just two fifths of a second of the 1:40 bet $ 2 / 5 . The victory strengthens Gun Runner's reputation for durability, reliability and "consistent class", and encourages his connections to run it at the $ 10 million Dubai World Cup. "He's getting better and better and (Razorback) is a very pleasant performance, even better than anticipated," said Doug Cauthen of Three Chimneys Farm. "He's a good horse and he proves it."
On March 25, Gun Runner entered the Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai as part of a fourteen field titled by Arrogate, who has won the Breeders' Cup Classic and Pegasus World Cup after defeating Gun Runner in Travers. On a muddy track, Gun Runner traces the early leaders then leads when the pitch changes to the home. Gun Runner continued to move well but surrendered to Arrogate, who had overcome a poor start to record the dominant victory. Gun Runner's second position earns 2 million dollars. After the Dubai World Cup, his connections announced that Gun Runner will fight Arrogate at least once again, in the 2017 Breeders' Classic Cup.
On May 1, it was announced that the next start of Gun Runner would be at Handicap Stephen Foster Class 1 at Churchill Downs on June 17th. Stephen Foster is the "Win and You Enter" race, part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series. The winners of each "Win and You Enter" contest get an automatic berth for a certain Breeders 'Cup race, which for Stephen Foster is the Breeders' Classic Cup. Weighing 124 pounds, Gun Runner drew post 3 in Stephen Foster and fitted it as a favorite 4-5 in the morning. At the time of post, his chances fell to 1-2. Sent to lead early, Gun Runner set the pace at Stephen Foster and led the field to the first turn and backstretch. In the second turn, 10-1 shot Stanford attempted to make an offer to take the lead, but Gun Runner pulled away to win with a long 7, margin winning record for Stephen Foster. Gun Runner 1: 47.56 end time of just 0.28 seconds from Victory Gallop record record at Stephen Foster 1999. He was rated US Timeform 139 for his performance, tied with Arrogate at Pegasus World Cup for the highest Timeform rating reached in the US on year 2017.
Asmussen was relieved that Gun Runner earned his place in the early Breeders' Cup Classic. "There's nothing more I can say than this horse is really real," he said after Stephen Foster Gun Runner's victory. Asmussen said the next start of the colt would likely be in Saratoga and mention Whitney Stakes as a possible target. Jockey Florent Geroux was also very impressed with Gun Runner's performance. "You know, come back and think about the race, very rare as a jockey that you can feel horses never tired in 1/8-mile 1 class," he said.
Gun Runner performs the next start at Whitney Stakes on Aug. 5 at Saratoga, going as 3-5 heavy favorites. After a good start, he finished second behind the Cautious Giant, who had been included as a "rabbit" for his stablemate Story. Entering the far corner, Geroux decided his pace was too slow and let Gun Runner take control of the race. In the stretch, he continues to win the 5 span 1 / 4 , even though the strong run late from Keen Ice.
The victory attracted further attention in social media because Gun Runner ran the last half mile with a horseshoe caught on his tail; shoes from Cautious Giant fly loose when Gun Runner starts his pace. "We watch the tape repeatedly, repeatedly," says Asmussen, "and if you have never seen anything before, just wait. Can you believe it? I mean if we try to throw one and stick it on his tail when he stands, still We will go 0-for-1,000 - let alone run, let alone Gun Runner, let alone at Whitney - and it remains. [With] how fast he goes [during the race], it's held from When he slows down to walk, then it comes to him. We certainly did not realize it until he got back to the winner circle, but there was no call to him I mean there are still nails in it. "The race improved the Gun Runner rating to 127 in the Best Hurray World's Best Racehorse Ratings in August, maintaining its third-place ranking all over the world.
On September 2nd, Gun Runner made his next start at Woodward Stakes in Saratoga, going as a forbidden favorite in field five. Trainer Todd Pletcher enters two horses, with Neolithic assigned to set a quick start speed in hopes of exhausting Gun Runner, while Rally Cry is meant to cover from behind. The race went as expected, with Gun Runner stalking Neolithic for the first 6 furlongs before swinging to take the lead at the far corner. Gun Runner maintains its momentum and is finally won by 1 / 4 during the final-closing Rally Rally. Time 1: 47.43 is Woodward's fastest bet since the race was transferred to Saratoga in 2006 and earned a high-speed Beyer Speed ââGun Runner. Figure 115. He was also given a US Timeform rating of 142, the highest ever US Timeform rank ever. achieved. "That's better than Whitney, only stronger, faster overall," Geroux said. "I do not think he's 100 percent boost, I really think we have one step forward with him. We'll need one against the Arrogate."
A few weeks after Woodward, Asmussen sent Gun Runner to California with assistant coach Scott Blasi, training rider Angel Garcia and groom Gabino Gutierrez, allowing horse time to adjust. Breeders Cup Classic 2017 is on November 4th at Del Mar Racetrack. Going to the race, handicappers are divided over who is the best horse in North America. Arrogate's victory at Dubai's World Cup over Gun Runner has been ranked as the best performance of the year up to that time by Longines, but Arrogate suffered two defeats after returning to the United States. Instead, Gun Runner won three first class direct races and appeared to be getting stronger. Gun Runner created as a 9-5 morning favorite over Arrogate's top at 2-1 in the field of eleven. With time posting, odds in Gun Runner have slightly drifted to 2.4-1, making it the second betting option. Gathered, who had beaten Arrogate in the Pacific Classic earlier in the year, is the third choice.
Gun Runner broke well and quickly climbed to the front with Collected pressing it from the outside. They ran in the opening quarter in a fast time of 22.50 seconds, then Gun Runner opened up a bit of excellence as he moved around the first corner and backed out. Geroux held him lightly, then said the horse was relaxed and happy, "dropping his ears back and forth." Round the last turn, Gather the covered ground and both head-and-head with the remaining quarter of a mile. Entering the stretch, Gun Runner responds to the challenge and back away, winning with 2 1 / 4 long. Arrogate has never been a factor in the race after breaking badly, finishing in the heat to die for the fifth.
Gun Runner earned Beyer Speed ââSpeed ââHeight of 117 while earning his first win at a distance 1 <1 / 4 miles, coming in early in Del Mar. He also wins even though there is a clear trail where the front runner on the inside of the track seems to be harmed. "The things you fear allow you to prove yourself," Asmussen said. "This is the stage where you have to be the best, and he is in his best condition." 2018: World Cup and Pensions Pegasus
On January 25, 2018, Gun Runner was elected America's Older Dirt Horse and the Horse of the Year award for 2017. He became the third Horse of the Year winner for his coach.
Two nights later, Gun Runner enters his final race, the Pegasus World Cup. He drew an outside post position, which was a concern in the 1 mile mileage race in Gulfstream Park for the very start of the 1st span of 1 / 8 close to first turn. However, Geroux used the Gun Runner's early speed to get racing space and move quickly towards the rails, settling in second place just outside Collected. Both set a quick start, then Gun Runner made his move at the far corner. Collected falls back but the West Coast begins to close, reaching within medium range before Gun Runner responds by withdrawing to 2 1 / 2 long win. Gun Runner ended his career with five consecutive wins - all of Grade 1 tests.
