Histori

The brothers started wine in 1933, following the lifting of the ban after years of planting and selling grapes. Ernest and Julio compete with larger, more established, and better-financed companies, including more than 800 wine companies established in California in the first few years after the lifting of the Prohibition. Their initial capital was less than $ 6,000 (~ $ 110,000 inflation adjusted to 2017), with $ 5,000 from what Ernest had borrowed from his mother-in-law. The brothers learned the craft of commercial wine making by reading the old pre-ban pamphlets published by the University of California that they took from the basement of the Modesto Public Library.

In 1993, E & amp; J. Gallo is the largest winery in the country, with a 25% share of the American wine market.

Business

Trademark dispute

In 1986, the Gallo brothers sued their younger brother Joseph for selling branded cheese under the name of Joseph Gallo Farms. Joseph then replied, alleging that Ernest and Julio conspired to steal his share of the inheritance of their father. These claims include wine, where the evidence presented by Joseph's lawyers suggests that it was actually initiated by their father. Joseph Gallo lost both lawsuits and was forced to rename his business to Joseph Farms.

In the 1990s, Gallo Winery made a deal with Gallo Pasta (a Spanish company) that the latter would not sell their pasta in the United States. Gallo filed a stop-and-break order in April 2009 against "The Spanish Table", a specialty food retailer based in Seattle, to bring paste despite previous agreements with the makers.

E & amp; J Gallo Winery is the largest family wine factory in the United States.

In February 2010, twelve French wine makers and merchants who supplied wine to Gallo because the Red Bicyclette brand was found guilty in a French court of fraud, as they claimed the inferior wine sold to Gallo was Pinot noir..

Distribution

In addition to the Family Vineyards Gallo brand, the company makes, markets, and distributes wines under more than 60 other labels. (See below for a list of other labels/brands.) The company also makes Thunderbird and Night Train Express low-end wine.

On September 14, 2007, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia announced a partnership with E & amp; J Gallo Winery to produce a wine brand labeled " Martha Stewart Vintage ." The initial release was 15,000 cases, comprising 2006 Sonoma County Chardonnay, 2005 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon and 2006 Sonoma County Merlot (for Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, North Carolina, Denver, Phoenix, and Portland, Oregon).

Working relationship

In October 2009, the California Agricultural Labor Relations Agency (CALRB) revoked the 2007 elections to release the United States Agricultural Worker from Gallo Winery, citing the disruption of Gallo.

This is the second time in a decade the vote to abolish union was canceled because Gallo charges illegally trying to influence the litigation; the other was a decision in 2003 in which CALRB rejected the election citing a foreman who improperly requested a signature for a petition for voting. Gallo appealed the decision.

Ecological impact

Gallo helped develop and implement the Sustainable Wine Gardening Code of Practice, in collaboration with the Winegrape Wine Winery and Winegrape Farmers' Institute of California.

The Code promotes sustainable practices that are environmentally friendly, economically viable and socially just. It covers virtually every aspect of the wine business including viticulture and grape growing, wine making, purchasing and establishing and maintaining productive relationships with neighbors and local communities.

Gallo received ISO 14001 certification from the International Organization for Standardization. This certification is designed to help and guide companies globally to reduce their environmental impact.

In April 2009, the State Water Resources Control Board served Gallo Glass Co. (a subsidiary of Gallo Winery) with a stop and stop order and a $ 73,000 fine for allegedly delivering water from the Russian River into an unlicensed reservoir; however, there is a provision for licensing the reservoir under proper flow and capacity monitoring.

Marketing

Ernest and Julio were one of the pioneers of wine commercials on television and launched many wine advertising campaigns. (One of them helped popularize "Hymne," composed and performed by Vangelis Papathanassiou, featuring it as a background music in some of his television commercials.) They are the first to introduce brand management and modern merchandising to the wine industry, and lead the way to bring new products to the shelf -the shop. They are first in breakthrough quality initiatives such as long-term planter contracts for grape varieties and wine research programs. They also first build significant foreign sales and marketing power to export California wines abroad.

Wine Brand

  • AndrÃÆ'  © is the best selling brand of sparkling wine in the United States. Often it sells for $ 4 to $ 5 per bottle, depending on the store. It is available in various types including Brut, Extra Dry, Cold Duck, Blush, Spumante, Strawberry, and California Champagne peach flavors, among others. Andrà ©  © 's California Champagne is fermented en masse.
While the United States agreed in 2006 to disagree with the new wine label for US-produced products that include the term "Champagne," Andrà ©  © is legally allowed to use the term as a grandfathered label. Andrà ©  © 's Brut California Champagne has been described as a sparkling wine that many people have noted is their first experience with this wine variety. A champagne expert says it is "like a ginger ale - pale yellow in color, lemon and on the sweet side, with perhaps an apple flavor as well and a low bubble".
  • Carlo Rossi is a wine brand produced by E & amp; J Gallo Winery. The brand was named after Charles Rossi, at that time a seller for Gallo and Gallo family relationships by marriage. Charlie Rossi starred in TV commercials for the brand in the 1970s. Carlo Rossi wine is at one point the second best-selling brand in the United States. Carlo Rossi is reflected in the popular culture in the single E-40, "Carlos Rossi."
  • Boone's Farm was once a brand of apple wine produced by E & amp; J Gallo Winery. Now, the taste of malt-based is not wine-based because of changes in the tax laws. This brand is popular on campuses because of its cheap price. Boone farm drinks, served in 750 ml bottles are often in the cooling-box area at department stores all over the United States. In some U.S. states, such as Utah, some Boone Farm products are labeled as malt drinks and not as apple/orange wine products, as state liquor laws prohibit the sale of wine at grocery stores and department stores.

Vineyard trial

Biotechnology experts at Gallo are using their vineyard resources to experiment on the planting of new grape varieties in California's wine region in an attempt to see which varieties grow best in different climates and soil types. One of the varieties that Gallo has tried in San Joaquin Valley is the French wine Ederena wine.
