History

Overview

Dunnville is a Cayuga settlement site named Detgahnegaha'gÃÆ'³: wah .

The European settlement was originally built as a gateway to Welland's "feeder" channel and the city once boasted several water-powered factories and the once-crowded port of the canal. The feeder line was closed in the late 1880s and the last plant was destroyed and replaced with a condo complex about ten years ago.

There is an impassable dune in Dunnville that regulates the Grand River level at Port Maitland which, in the 19th century, also helped set the Welland Canal level (from 1829 to 1887 when the canal (3) began taking its water directly from Lake Erie).

Dunnville was founded as a village in 1860 and then as a city in 1900. In 1974, the city joined the towns of Dunn, Canborough, Moulton and Sherbrooke when the City of Haldimand-Norfolk Region was formed. In 2001, Dunnville and all other municipalities in the area were disbanded and its territory divided into two municipalities with one level of status with the city but called the district. What is meant by the city entered Dunnville now consists of Ward 5 and 6 in Haldimand County.

Just a few miles from Lake Erie, Dunnville has many private vacation properties.

There are many events and natural attractions. In June the annual Mudcat Festival is held to celebrate one of the most famous residents of the Grand River. The festival includes a parade, a strong man's contest, midway, and fireworks. Another popular event is the Dunnville Farm Fair, held at the end of August which includes heavy, light and miniature horse, sheep and sheep performances.

Dunnville has tennis, golf and swimming facilities and plenty of bed & amp; The breakfast and camp sites to stay at. Tuesday and Saturday are Farmer's Day Days since the local relocation Dunnville is currently building a new Farmers Market Pavilion that provides more protection from the elements while helping support what local farms offer (heating may still be a problem).

Former RCAF Training Station World War II, Dunnville Airport, offers a unique window on history with a huge hangar and runway. Previously used for leisure and skydiving, the airport is now closed for six large wind turbine generator generators at the airfield. The airport is also home to the latest museum of Haldimand County, Dunnville RCAF Museum No. 1. 6. It is also the home of the Driver Rehabilitation Center for the reality television show The Worst Racer of Canada since the sixth season, which aired in 2010.

The Grand River and nearby Lake Erie offer water activities including swimming, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and features a prime location for fishing.

Nearby is the Byng Island Conservation Area, Rock Point Provincial Park, and the new dock at Port Maitland. In the fall, Rock Point hosts thousands of monarch butterflies heading south. Dunnville is also the site of one of the largest expanses of the province's important wetlands in Ontario; bird watching and nature photography are practiced there.

Smuckers Foods of Canada Co., which operates Bick's Pickle Plant (the largest factory of Dunnville), provides employment for a small portion of the city's population, especially students. In 2001, Bick's headquarters facility in Scarborough, Ontario was closed and its operations moved to Dunnville location. Bick's Dunnville facility closed at the end of November 2011.

This community is the easternmost city that belongs to the Green Energy Hub of Southern Ontario.
