Careers
Gardner grew up with a horse and became a professional trainer at the age of 18. He initially trained the Tennessee Walking Horses and competed in the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, while working for renowned coach Joe Fleming in Tennessee. In 1993, a friend introduced him to Spotted Saddle Horses, a related breed, and he turned to train them in his own cage, which is located outside Shelbyville, Tennessee. Gardner was named Trainer of the Year for the first time in 1999, and for the second time in 2004. In 2006 he and my horse Benny Too won the World Championship with pleasure. Gardner served as president of the Assistant Horse Trainers Association of 2007. He is also on the board of the Association of Rare Hare and Expectations (SSHBEA). In November 2007, Gardner's cage was destroyed in a fire that killed more than 30 horses. Fires started one morning and a neighbor called 911 for the first time at 3 am. The Gardners, who lived offsite, were notified but by the time they arrived, the barn was destroyed. The Shelbyville community supports Gardner and his wife as they rebuild their stable training horses and finally return.
Gardner shows up with six different horse races or sports associations and has been named Trainer of the Year 11 times. In 2010, he was inducted into the Spotted Saddle Horse Breeders 'and the Exhibitor' Hall of Fame Association. In the same year, he and the Generatin 'Horse Trail of Fire won the World Championships. Three of Gardner's Trainer of the Year awards come from the National Spotted Saddle Horse Association (NSSHA) in 2012-2014, and three more from SSHBEA in 2009-2011. In a 2014 interview, Gardner discussed a 2007 fire that destroyed his cage and said it had taken "hard work, plenty of time, and good health" to return to victory. That year he again had 30 horses in training.
In 2015 Gardner is a Trainer of the Year at SSHBEA and NSSHA. He has an assistant coach and warehouse manager, Crystal Deputy, who is also a Trainer of the Year.
