Racing career

1947: season two years

Citation won her first start as a two-year-old at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. He broke Arlington Park's track record for five miles at the start of all three. For this year, he ran nine times, winning eight starts and earning $ 155,680. His only defeat came on the heels of his stablemate, Bewitch, in Washington Park Futurity, whose stallion won in a six-furlong bet. Citation won victory in the Elementary Ladder, Test of Power, Stake Futuriti, and Pimlico Powers. He was named the champion two years.

1948: three-year season

Citation began the 1948 racing season with two wins over the older uniformed horses, who were crowned the Racing Horse of 1947, in the qualifying race and Handicap Seminole. It is rare for a three-year-old to defeat older horses at the beginning of the year, let alone a defective star like Armed.

After Citation won Everglades Stakes and Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah Park, Snider sank while fishing in the Florida Keys. Calumet Farm hired Arcaro, one of Snider's friends. At the first start of Arcaro in Citation, they lost to Saggy in Chesapeake Trial Stakes. This is the last race that Quote lost for almost two years.

The quote reverses the loss to Saggy at Chesapeake Stakes, which he won over a 4x long Bovard, with Saggy also returning. Citation followed by his final Kentucky Derby preparations, victory in Derby Trial Stakes.

In Kentucky Derby, driven by Arcaro, Citation was won by 3 ½ inches over his stablemate, finally in 1949 Horse of the Year Coaltown, and Arcaro gave the widow of former Al Snider jockey part of his Derby wallet money. The quote was then sent to Baltimore where he won Pitchness Stakes with a length of 5½. From there he won the Jersey Bets before going to Belmont, New York, and became the 8th Triple Crown winner by capturing Belmont Stakes, tying a record of 2:28 1/5 bets set by Triple Crown 6 winner, Count Fleet.

Citation then won the Stars and Stripes Handicap, matching Armed's track record. He next won the American Derby and Sysonby Mile. After that came the Jockey Club Gold Cup at 2 miles (3.2 km), which he won by seven long over 1947 Preakness winner Phalanx. He then won the Empire City Gold Cup.

At the start of the next Citation, he hinders potential challengers and wins Pimlico Special in a rare walkover. Citation then traveled to California, where he finished the year with two wins, including at Handicap Tanforan at Tanforan Racecourse.

At the end of his three-year season, Citation has a record of 20 starts, 19 wins and $ 709,470, for new season record. Total career records now reach 27 victories and two seconds in 29 starts and earn $ 865,150. He has also amassed a winning streak of 15 races. For his performance, Citation was named Horse of the Year, earning 161 out of 163 votes possible in a poll conducted by Turf and Sport Digest magazine. Toward the end of his three-year season, he developed an oscillet.

1950-1951: next career

The osselet injury made Citation from the race in 1949, but he returned to the race in 1950, winning the 16th consecutive race at Santa Anita Park (a stand-alone row between the big North American horses until Cigar matched that achievement in 1994 - 96; Zenyatta and Peppers Pride both broke their targets by winning their 19th consecutive race, Peppers Pride in 2008 and Zenyatta in 2010, Rapid Redux then surpassed their 2012 record with 22 consecutive wins, major betting competition). The owner, Calumet Farm, had brought the Citation back from his injury in 1950 with the goal of making it the first horse to earn $ 1 million, but he came against British imported Noor, who defeated the Citation four times (Citation brought more weight in the first three meetings) at Santa Anita Handicap at 1Ã, miles, San Juan Capistrano Handicap at 1Ã,¾ miles in world time records, Handicap Forty Niners on 1 1/8 miles in record time, and Golden Gate Handicap. In the last show, Noor admitted heavily for Citation and set a 1:58/5 world record that stood as America's record on the ground path until Spectacular Bid broke it 30 years later. The citation time in this race is also a note; he did not become a millionaire by the age of five simply because Noor ran faster than any horse in history until then. Citation itself set a world record in winning the Golden Gate Mile Handicap at 1:33 3/5 in the race that Noor attended.

The quote was brought back by the owner once again at the age of six in 1951 in an attempt to become the first racehorse to win a record one million dollars. After the two third places were completed, the quote finished out of money for the first time in Hollywood Premiere Handicap. After another loss in the Argonaut Handicap, he returned to form with victories at Handicap Century, American Handicap, and the Hollywood Gold Cup, winning over his stablemate, Bewitch mare. The Gold Cup win gave him over $ 1 million in career income, and he later retired to study.
