Inspiration and recording
In the liner notes for the 1993 Rolling Stones compilation album Jump Back , Jagger stated, "I remember we were sitting around initially doing this with Gram Parsons, and I think his version came out a little before ours. it's written about Marianne but I do not think it's it's all better at the time But I'm really very deep in this part emotionally. "Richards said," If there's a classic way Mick and I work together, I have a riff and chorus line, Mick is stuck in the verses just like "Satisfaction". " Wild Horses "is about the ordinary thing, not wanting to be on the road, a million miles from where you want to be."
Originally recorded for three days at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama for 2-4 December 1969 while Albert and David Maysles filming for a movie called Gimme Shelter, the song was not released until more than a year later due to a dispute law with former band labels. Together with "Brown Sugar", this is one of the two Rolling Stones compositions of Sticky Fingers (1971) where ABKCO Records has a joint rights with the Stones. It features session players Jim Dickinson on piano, Richards on electric guitars and twelve string acoustic guitars, and Mick Taylor on acoustic guitar. Taylor uses the Nashville tuning, where the EADG strings of the acoustic guitar are strung one octave higher than in the standard tuning. Ian Stewart was present at the session, but refused to do the piano part on the track due to the minor chord prevalence, which he did not like to play.
