The sports team in Virginia includes some professional teams, but no professional premier league team. Virginia is by far the most populous US state with no major league sports league playing on its borders, although two major league teams represent Washington, DC - Washington Redskins NFL and NHL's Washington Capitals - having training facilities and operational headquarters in Northern Virginia.

There are proposals for finding a stadium for the Washington team in Northern Virginia or to find a team in the Hampton metro area around Norfolk, but nothing works. When Jack Kent Cooke decided to build a replacement for the old RFK Stadium as home of the Washington Redskins, he considered a site in Alexandria until public opposition developed. Attempts to bring the National Hockey League expansion franchise to Norfolk in the 1990s were rejected by the NHL.
Houston Astros almost sold and moved to Northern Virginia in 1996, but Major League Baseball owners entered and suspended the proposed deal to give Houston time to agree a new stadium deal. A proposal to relocate Montreal Expos to Norfolk was considered by Major League Baseball in 2004. MLB has also considered a site near Washington Dulles International Airport in Loudoun County as the new home for Expos. However, the reluctance by state officials to dedicate funds to the project along with concerns about traffic helped lead MLB to vote for Washington as the new home of Expos. The Florida Marlins have mentioned Norfolk as one of the cities that can relocate the team, but Marlins will now remain in South Florida for the foreseeable future as they move to a new park in Miami in 2012, adopting their currents. the name of Miami Marlins at that time.
The Virginia Squires played at the American Basketball Association from 1970 to 1976; the team remained from a partial league merger with the NBA after the 1975-76 season.

The Virginia Destroyers played in United Football League in 2011, and started playing in the 2012 season, but the Destroyers folded, along with the rest of the UFL.
