Red Star Rescue is a program run by the American Humane Association. The goal of the program is to send volunteers to save animals in case of disaster, or from animal cruelty. The Red Star Rescue team is trained to deal with various catastrophes, and they bring resources to set up and operate temporary shelters. The team has nearly 200 national volunteers. In the past five years, Red Star Rescue has saved and protected 64,000 pets.

History
The Red Star Rescue project began in 1916 after the War Department recruited the American Humane Association to help save hundreds of thousands of wounded horses during World War I in Europe.
Red Star Rescue conducts animal rescue missions during the September 11 attacks, the 2010 Haiti quake, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Sandy. During Hurricane Sandy, the Red Star Rescue American Humane Association team sent more than 100,000 pounds of food, supplies, and medicines to storm-affected areas.
In 2013, Red Star Rescue was invited by the State of Oklahoma to provide assistance after the tornado. The Red Star Rescue team covers over 2,000 miles in less than a day to reach the disaster site.
An article in Pawcurious states that Red Star Rescue enlists, "a highly trained animal rescue provider" who "provides invaluable support during disasters."

Lois Pope Rescue Vehicle
In 2013, the American Humane Association introduced their new "Lois Pope Red Star Rescue Vehicle" to participate in the Red Star Rescue effort. This vehicle is a 50-foot Ford F-350 with an emergency emergency trailer equipped to provide a wide range of emergency services.
Red Star Rescue also has an 82-foot truck in its fleet. rigs are used to rescue animals affected by Hurricane Sandy in Pennsylvania.
Red Star Rescue has vehicles equipped to protect up to 100 animals that are regularly deployed in their rescue efforts.
Working Against Cruelty to Animals
Red Star Rescue performs large scale operations to save animals from fights and dangerous shelters.
In 2014, the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NJSPCA) requested a Red Star Rescue service to rescue the animals after the shelter in the Helmetta region. Red Star Rescue removes 100 cats and dogs from hazardous conditions. Animal shelters are quarantined by the health department.
Red Star Rescue also took 225 dogs after the outbreak of multi-state dogfighting operations with locations in Baltimore and the West Virginina. 22 people were indicted for their role in dog fight rings.
