The Pegasus World Cup is the first American Thoroughbred horse race to run on January 28, 2017 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. With a $ 12 million purse for its inaugural launch, Pegasus World Cup surpassed Dubai World Cup as the world's richest horse race. It runs on the ground at a distance of 1 mile/9th (9 furlongs) and is open to a four-year-old horse years and over. The Grade I rating is assumed from Handicap Donn.
Participants carry à £ 124 (à £ 56) with a three pound allowance for fillies and horses. Horses that walk without the use of a pre-race drug furosemide (better known as Lasix) receive a pound of five pounds.
The race is named after a mythical horse, a 110-foot statue that stands in Gulfstream Park.

History
Frank Stronach first proposed the idea for the race during the Loyalty-Owned Conference in Gulfstream in January 2016. The original proposal requested an annual 1 1 / 4 -mile (10 furlong) races to run in Gulfstream or Santa Anita Park in mid to late January, which will not interfere with the Breeders' Cup or Dubai World Cup. Timing also allows the horse to run one final race before retiring to the stud, as the North American marriage season begins in mid-February. "I think racing usually has a bit of a pause this year - we have to wait for spring for something to happen," coach Bob Baffert said in January 2017. "When I heard about the idea last year, I thought wow, American Pharoah might be there for one more try it. "
The Stronach Group officially announced plans for the race in May 2016, with a shortened span of 1 1 1 / 8 (9 furlong). Based on the format, 12 shareholders each paid $ 1 million to buy positions at the gates for unspecified horses. The shareholders then have the right to race, lease, contract or share a starter, or sell their place at the gate, and will have the first right of refusal for the next race. Shareholders also have a similar share in net income from the race.
Each shareholder is permitted to enter two horses first. A previously submitted horse that does not enter the Pegasus World Cup is eligible to compete in the newly created Poseidon Stakes, which runs under similar conditions but offers a $ 400,000 wallet and requires a $ 20,000 entry fee.
After its maiden run in 2017, it was announced that the second Pegasus World Cup in 2018 will be contested for a higher wallet of $ 16 million, with $ 1 million from each of the 12 starting positions and an additional $ 4 million contributed by Stronach Group.
2017 Running
The first run of the race brought Grade I status, which was transferred from Donn Handicap which was stopped by the American Graded Stakes Committee. New betting races usually have to wait two years before they qualify for graded or registered status.
The race was promoted as the final match between California Chrome, twice American Horse of the Year, and Arrogate, ranked by IFHA as the World's Best Racehorse 2016. California Chrome pulled out the outer positions that made it widespread in the first turn. He eventually settled behind the early leaders with Arrogate but could not respond when the latter made his pace, perhaps after embracing his foot early in the race. California Chrome is reduced to prevent further injury possibility and finish ninth. Meanwhile the Arrogate swept forward and was stretched to win with almost five lengths over the Dhamma Shaman. The race time proved controversial. The official time, measured by Trakus based on the transmitter on the horses' horse tablecloth, is 1: 47.61. However, the clocking expert set the race time almost one second faster, at 1: 46.9. The controversy of time causes Beyer Speed ââThe figure for Arrogate is increased from 116 to 119. Gulfstream performs frame-by-frame video analysis and determines the exact time is 1: 46.83, a new track record.
2018 Running
In December 2017, Gulfstream announced confidence that there will be 12 entries for 2018 running, although some shares have not been sold. The Stronach Group finally purchased the last three slots for the race, which were then leased to owners of Giant Expectations, War Story and Singing Bullet. The three horses run under the name of the Pegasus Race Participant with a revenue-sharing arrangement.
Having won the Breeders' Cup Classic 2017 on his way to the Horse of the Year award, Gun Runner's connection announced that the horse will retire after the 2018 Pegasus World Cup. Its main rivals include West Coast (Travers), Collected (Pacific Classic), Sharp Azteca (Cigar Mile), War Story, Gunnevera and Seeking the Soul (Clark Handicap). The Eclipse Award, the winner of Forever Unbridled mare (Breeders' Cup Distaff) was originally expected to enter but ultimately lost the race. Toast of New York, previously famous for second place in the Breeders' Cup Classic 2014, entered the race after running in just one race in nearly three years due to injury and stud duty.
The main concern for Gun Runner's connection was when he drew an outside post position for the race, a major concern in Gulfstream Park because the early gates were so close to the first turn. However, Gun Runner broke well and moved quickly towards the rail, then sat in second position outside Collected. The two horses set the initial step quickly followed by Giant Expectations and West Coast. Around the final bend, Gun Runner performs his moves and leads. Collected and Giant Expectations both fall back, each occupying the seventh and ninth position. The West Coast is pushed forward and closed in a considerable distance before Gun Runner responds and retreats, winning by 2 <1 / 2 length. Gunnevera closed from behind to finish the third round well, while Fear the Cowboy's long shot finished fourth. Maps Pegasus World Cup
