Plot

The film opened in 1932 when World War I veterans protested and raised funds in Washington D.C. for the promised war bonus but never received from the government, a real event known as the March Bonus. US cavalry and infantry are present for mass control. The installed cavalry was ordered by Major John Hardesty (Bob Gunton), to present their swords to detain the protesters. First Sergeant or "Top" John Libbey (Don Johnson), along with three fellow soldiers, refused to draw their swords because the demonstrators were the people they served during the war. As a result, their military career was tarnished and they were relegated to duty at a remote outpost in Southwest America.

Two years later, Lieutenant Marshall Buxton (Craig Sheffer), arrived at his new post, where he was found during an interview with Retired Colonel Stuart (Rod Steiger) that he was so commissioned for a fight and that many of the others were also due to insubordination. Lt. Buxton meets Sergeant Libbey, Quinlain (Neil Melville), Mulcahey (John Dennis Johnston), and Shattuck (Robert Coleby), who together manage the remount herd.

Colonel Stuart was replaced as a postal commander by Colonel Hardesty, (on promotion). Hardesty's mission is to help in the transition to military forces. To achieve this, the horses at the outpost must be destroyed. Buxton was ordered to guard the animals for slaughter. Watching the first hundred horses shot helpless in mass graves, Lieutenant Buxton decides, with Libby and Sergeant approval, to end the massacre and push the remaining flocks to safety.

A hunting ensues that forces the apostates and horses to the north. Along the way, the men get a little help from retired Colonel Stuart in his position with the US Department of War and the daughter of Colonel Stuart, Jessica (Gabrielle Anwar), who is a journalist. Many horses were lost during the trip, due to fatigue and injury. The original idea for horses was Indian Reservation in Montana but because of their Hardesty Armored Division they were forced to go north to Canada.

After reaching the Canadian-US border and making a final trip with the horses, people were granted a pardon by President Franklin D. Roosevelt while being fired by inaccurate light artillery because Gunnery Sergeant's "inadvertent" order made them further away from they were because he did not believe in the shooting of American soldiers. Buxton's men and the remaining horses are allowed to pass a safe passage across the border by Royal Canada's Mounted Police. While Lt. Buxton decides to return to the United States to face charges, Libbey wants to head for Alaska, others decide to stay in Canada.

Accuracy

While the film depicts the US Army that wiped out the cavalry riding unit in 1934 by destroying all its horses, research conducted at the US Army Military Historical Center and records at the MacArthur Memorial showed no record of the horse massacre as alleged in the film. , or an order or plan for such destruction.

In fact the US Army and various units of the National Guard maintained cavalry units riding into the 1940s. Several US Army units, including the 26th Cavalry Regiment of Filipino Guerrillas, 5307 (Temporary) Composite Units ("Merrill's Marauders"), and parts of the 3rd Infantry Division and 10th Mountain Division using horses and mules for transportation men and equipment. during the Second World War, even fighting in a few examples. US occupation troops in Germany include a plated platoon.

The US Cavalry School continued to train horses and riders until 1946, when it was inactive. When the Army Remount Service ended, the horses and the program were transferred to the Department of Agriculture, which sold the horses at auction the following year.

The massacre of wild horses by breeders in intermountain areas is not uncommon in the 1960s. Many horsemen in this region wear the Stetsons in the "Montana Peak" style that resembles the "Trooper Hat" of the old cavalry unit. This may have contributed to the belief that the Army had slaughtered the horses. In his 1992 save "Save the Wild Horses" for Smithsonian fundraising, Stockton Master Artist Jack Feldman describes mustangs, rounded, their eyes glowing red, illuminated by spotlights, in massacre at night.
