Necklace cross is a necklace that features a Christian cross or a cross worn by Christians and others. They are often bought in stores, or received as gifts for ceremonies such as baptism and confirmation.
The cross is often used as an indication of commitment to the Christian faith. In addition, some Christians believe that wearing a cross offers the protection of the wearer of evil. Individuals, including Christians and some non-Christians, can also wear a cross necklace as fashion accessory.
Most followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church will wear a cross attached to a chain or matÃÆ'äb , a silk rope. MatÃÆ'äb is bound to the neck at baptism, and the recipient is expected to wear matÃÆ'äb at any time. Women often attach a cross or other pendant to matÃÆ'äb, but this is not considered important.
In some countries, such as the Albanian People's Socialist Republic, an atheist state, the use of necklaces has historically been banned. Many Christian bishops of some denominations, such as the Anglican Church, wear a chest cross as a sign of their command.
In two published UK cases, nurse Shirley Chaplin and British Airways flight attendant Nadia Eweida were disciplined for wearing a cross necklace at work, violating their terms of employment. Both took their case to the European Court of Human Rights; The Chaplin case was dismissed, while Eweida was given compensation on the grounds that the British government had failed to weigh its right to religious sufficiency. In light of such cases, in 2012, the former Archbishop of the Anglican Communion, Lord Carey, and then the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Keith O'Brien, has urged all Christians to wear a cross necklace on a regular basis.
