This channel was launched on July 14, 1999, and was established by United Video Satellite Group, owner of TV Guide Network magazine (now Pop) and TV Guide (from where "TVG" was taken partially). On October 5, 1999, Gemstar International Group Ltd. bought United Video Satellite Group. In May 2006, TVG introduced several new programs into its schedule including the Morning Line , Fandicapping : 58 Flat , Lady Luck i (the panel discussion program of all women focused on the day's races) and Drive Time (which includes exclusive racing from Meadowlands). TVG also provides coverage of "all access" on certain weekends. TVG put microphones on the options jockeys, owners, coaches, and early crew to give viewers a view of the race.

The channel previously operates a fictitious betting site, TVGfree.net, which allows it to be present in fifteen states that prohibit television and off-track betting, operating the same as poker sites using.net domains to distinguish their fictitious betting sites from the.com site which allows real gambling. This site was discontinued in early 2012 due to site upgrades, and is currently redirecting to TVG.com.

At the end of February 2007, TVG terminated its long-term affiliation with Churchill Downs Incorporated. On May 2, 2008, Gemstar-TV Guide was acquired by Macrovision (now Rovi Corporation) for $ 2.8 billion. Macrovision, which purchased Gemstar-TV Guide largely to increase the value of favorable VCR Plus and electronic program guide patents, later stated that it was considering the sale of TVG, TV Guide Network, and TV Edition TV edition print for the parties other. In late 2008, Macrovision sold TVG to Betfair for a cash charge of $ 50 million. The deal was completed on January 27, 2009, separating channels from companies that acquired founder owners in 2007.

In February 2015, Betfair acquired the only TVG competitor, HRTV, and began consolidating it into the TVG facility. The network was re-branded as a sister network, TVG2, in October 2015. TVG CEO Kip Levin explained that the merger allows the company to "make better use of TVG television facilities to deliver premium products for both networks. We hope to continue working with our partners, our key partners to distribute more high quality races and broadcasts to unprecedented racing enthusiasts.
