The Sales of Miles City Bucking Horse is a big rodeo stock auction that holds the third (two-day) full weekend of May in Miles City, Montana and a major social event for the community. Accompanied by a parade, racetrack, rodeo and a host of social events, it attracts rodeo share contractors from the United States and Canada who are looking for saddle bronc, bareback barges, and bull bull prospects.

The first Miles City Bucking Horse sales officially started in 1951, though unofficial sales were held in 1950.

"That's because Les Beaux, from Miles City Military Center, bought a group of wild bulls in Ekalaka from a man named Heavy Lester," says historian John Moore. "When Lester threw 35 bucking horses into the deal, Beaux did not know what to do with the bucking horses, so the sales idea came up," Moore said. "They advertise to people, and the sale lasts about 3 full days."

The horse included in the sale is not a "wild" horse or Mustang who, under the Wild and Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971, can not be sold. Instead, consignments are horses that are selectively raised as bucking stocks, excessive or unreachable horses from large farms, and spoiled spoiled horses who become very adept at being separated from riders. Similarly, the most controlled bulls were raised specifically as bucking stock.

The Miles City Bucking Horse Sale is also a western western theme song by Montana authors, on Sheep and Guns in Montana's Fishing Songs album. Sales are held every year, regardless of weather.
