Kicking Horse Mountain Resort (KHMR) is a ski resort located 14 km outside of Golden, British Columbia, Canada. It features what is currently the fourth highest vertical drop in North America, at 4,133 feet (1,260 m). Only 6 feet (1.8 m) shorter than Jackson Hole. In total, the resort covers more than 2,800 acres (11 km 2 ) of the lift-equipped ski fields. The resort is named after the Kite River Kicking nearby and Kicking Horse Pass, although the resort is in the Purcell Mountains while Kicking Horse is in the Rocky Mountain Trench in the Rocky Mountains.

Histori

Whitetooth Ski Area , a smaller facility owned by Golden Town opened in 1986 with the installation of the Pioneer Seat and three lanes at 2,000 vertical feet. Over the following years, additional surgery and cutting glades expanded the ski fields. The mountain became popular with skiers from adjacent towns on Powder Fridays when the hill was closed Monday through Thursday, so any new snow that fell during that week was not tracked.

Toward the end of the 90s, local residents became increasingly concerned about the financial viability of Whitetooth in the event that the Pioneer chair needed to be replaced. In 1996, Mayor Fred Demmon approached the Vancouver architect Oberto Oberti and discussed the possibility of finding investors to rehabilitate Whitetooth. Oberto Oberti provides an opportunity to his client, Ballast Nedam, the company that built the Confederation Bridge. Ballast Nedam is obliged to re-invest in Canada as part of its contract and purchase Whitetooth after the public selected 92.8 percent to support sales on September 20, 1997. Oberto Oberti's office prepared a new Master Plan for the resort, approved in 1999, together with the Agreement Master's Development with the Provinces of British Columbia.

Construction began in the summer of 2000 and the resort is expanded, now featuring the Eagle Eye Gondola and the permanent Catamount chair, reopened under a new name on December 8, 2000. The majority of the ski area consists of four large bowls (Crystal Bowl, Bowl Over, Feuz Bowl, and Super Bowl) that combine about half a mountain into one area, with a pretty gentle ski-out to the lift at the bottom. One run, This is 10 , is a 10 km long green run that connects the run in the main Bowl area. In 2002 new stairway to Heaven was added to allow access to the third bowl (Feuz Bowl), which generally saw less traffic. In 2010, the fourth bowl to the south of the existing resort (Super Bowl) was added to an area that added over 300 meters of new vertical.

The resort implements an expanded Master Plan, which was approved in 2009. In 2011, the resort was sold to Resorts of Canadian Rockies, the current owner.

Lifts

This hill is served primarily by the high-speed gondola, Golden Eagle Express , which rises from the base area to the summit. Two small chairs also operate from the base area, a fixed-grip (Catamount) quad and two fixed handles (Pioneer - relics from Whitetooth days). The grip of another fixed grip (Stairway to Heaven) serves the upper area to the north of the gondola, including the third bowl. Uphill's capacity is generally limited, and most skiers must return to the top through the gondolas at the foot of the mountain. Limited terrain parks are compensated by natural terrain and superb inland access.

Winter activities

Kicking Horse is often visited by skiers, snowboarders, snowskaters and telemarkers.

The annual snowfall ranges from 254 cm (100 ") at the bottom of the mountain to 700 cm (275") at the peak. Total in boundary ski area is more than 2800 Acre. Its slopes are famous for its light and dry snow, dubbed the Champagne Powder. The resort is open for skiers from mid December to mid April, and for mountain biking and a walk from late June to early October.

The ski field

Gondola accesses CPR Ridge, Crystal Bowl, and Bowl Over. The Crystal Bowl is large and open, providing intermediate skis and is the easiest way to get off the gondola. Bowl Over is also open but steeper and often has more moguls than Crystal Bowl. In 2007, a trail was made to allow advanced intermediate skiers to Bowl Over. The CPR ridge is located between two bowls. One side of the ridge, the Crystal Bowl side, provides some of the 75 inbound chutes available in Kicking Horse. These launches range from advanced to skiers. The other side of CPR Ridge is a series of glades.

Stairway to Heaven is a fixed chair lift located at the bottom of the Crystal Bowl and accesses the White Wall, Feuz Bowl, and Redemption Ridge. The White Wall is a quick seat next to the chair and is rated skiers for some great rock and cornice bands. Feuz Bowl is an advanced skis, very similar to CPR ridge. Stairway to Heaven follows Redemption Ridge. On one side there is a launch to the Feuz Bowl and the other side is a series of light back to the Crystal Bowl.

Terminator Ridge and Terminator Peak are located to the left of Bowl Over. On the south side of Terminator Ridge Super Bowl is accessible. On the north side, some steep, narrow, and expert glide back to Bowl Over. Climbing to the top of Terminator Ridge is often well done and takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on fitness.

Inland Access

Kicking Horse has extraordinary inland access. To the south of the resort, the Super Bowl is accessible by climb to Terminator Ridge. To the north of the resort, Rudi's Bowl and many other inland assets are accessible.
