Equine Massage is a horse massage practice. Beginning in the early 1990s, it has become a growing field of horse therapy, used for both day riding and post-traumatic rehabilitation. Supporters list a number of positive effects, including increased movement and pain reduction and stress response. Scientific studies are beginning to show possible benefits, although further studies are needed.

Scientific studies
Horse massage uses many techniques that were first used for human massage, and it is becoming more common in both competitive riding disciplines and driving pleasure. Proponents say that horse massage improves movement and reduces pain and stress response. Studies have shown that massage affects the muscular system at the cellular and fascial levels, as well as the physiological system. Preliminary studies have been conducted that show the possible benefits in exercise recovery, but strict additional research is needed to further examine these possibilities.
A 2015 study conducted at Western Kentucky University entitled: "Horse Response to Receive Masterson Methods" Integrated Equine Performed Body Care (TM) "documented changes in comfort levels after receiving bodywork.Research documentation included pre and post treatment evaluation, maintenance, owner questionnaire , and cribbing observations. Also, all evaluation and maintenance sessions are recorded with the intent of further analysis for changes in the range of motion, flexibility, and comfort levels as applicable.Research shows that bodywork sessions can reduce somatic pain and consequently reduce inequality, aggression and may be plagiarized. At the end of this study each horse has a better attitude, and their individual health problems are reduced.
A 2013 study of 20 equestrian horses examined the differences in horse behavior among rested horses, received massage and received the TTouchTM Tellington Method of treatment made by Linda Tellington-Jones. The study determined that the horse receiving TTouch had the highest levels of relaxed and positive behavior, while the resting horse showed signs of boredom and the horse receiving massage therapy tended to move more and behaved less casually. The experimental scientists confirmed that further studies of various therapeutic techniques are needed.
Regulations, training, and associations
In the United States, legal requirements vary by state and are determined by individual state animal councils. Currently, some states require veterinary supervision while others do not. Many schools offer certification programs in the field of animal massage and companions. Some of these schools are approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). International Association of Animal Massage & amp; Bodywork (IAAMB) is an association of animal massage and bodywork practitioners, including horse massage therapists.
