Plot

The film opens with Eagle Boy, a young man in search of vision. Then cut to the present, where the 17-year-old Lakota named Shane Chasing Horse lives on a Pine Ridge reservation. She is in trouble because she owes some money to a local gang - the money she uses to buy a beautiful ring for Mae Little Wounded, a girl she likes. Meanwhile, his mother asked him to ride his grandfather, Pete Chasing Horse, a storyteller, to the powwow. Shane was reluctant. However, when the gang comes after him, Shane changes his mind and goes to the powwow with his grandfather, who agrees to give him his truck once they reach the powwow. Grandpa tells Shane the story of a young Lakota who is trying to win the hand of the Bluebird Woman. She also tells the story of how the thunder spirit fell in love with a Mohawk woman and took her to the delicate world of Sky Woman, and how she raised her son in her village until she was beaten by one of the villagers and brought back to live with her father.

Later, when a pink-haired man eager to learn about indigenous cultures and hopes to be adopted by the Native American family asks to ride with them to the powwow, Shane says no. His grandfather then told him the Kiowa story about Tehan, a white man who lived among the Kiowa tribe and fought bravely beside them, and Shane relented and let the redhead ride with them. Shane's grandfather then tells how Elang Boy follows the advice of a spirited spirit spirit, and seeks an old woman who can give her a weapon to kill the mighty Uncegila snake. She was disgusted when the ugly old lady hugged her, but reacted very differently when she turned into a beautiful young woman. He denounces her, but gives her what she needs. Eagle Boy slams Uncegila, whose heart instructs him and gives him great strength and prophetic vision.

Eventually, the gang members who chased after Shane followed them, but accidentally drove their car off the cliff and into the Rio Grande River while chasing after him. Shane dives and saves them, and his struggle contrasts with Eagle Boy's underwater battle with Uncegila. The gang members ride them in a way, until they and the red-haired fighter leave them to travel with a group of attractive young women who also head to the powwows.

As they travel, Shane's grandfather tells Shane many other stories: some about the Coyote and the spider's Iktomi. The other is about a young Pawnee man and his mother being booed by the rest of their tribe until the boy finds an unwanted pony that brings them good medicine. When Shane and his grandfather saw the stars, Grandpa told the story of Quillwork Girl and his seven brothers, about a Cheyenne girl who put her faith in a dream and searched for seven brothers, but who later had to quarrel with the Buffalo nation. The next story is about a young Chinook woman who sacrificed herself to heal her sickly village, and the next one is about a young Blackfoot hunter who can not let go of his father's memory.

Shane and his grandfather went on their way, losing their truck along the way and continuing on horseback and on foot. Both became closer. However, it turns out that Shane's grandfather had taken them not to powwow but to the trailer home of Shane's father (Sam Chasing Horse). Shane was angry and disappointed to be deceived, but was persuaded to stay the night. The next morning Shane finally made peace with his estranged father. However, he later becomes sad when he discovers that his grandfather temporarily died in his sleep. Shane decides to proceed to the powwow on the horse, and his father says that when Shane comes home he will be there too. The end of Eagle Boy's story is revealed: Eagle Boy decides that he wants to live like another man, and does not obey it by revealing it to the whole tribe (to whom he seems to be no more than an ordinary rock). In powwow, Shane takes on the role of a storyteller, and the kids gather around him to listen.

Production

Filming lasts for four months and occurs mainly in Canada. Representatives from the Lakota tribe, Kiowa, Cheyenne, Pawnee, Blackfeet, Mohawk and Crow came on the film board to evaluate the authenticity of production during the filming and to suggest changes. One of the advisors was surprised to see the crew managed to get a rare Cheyenne leopard dog for one scene. Some scenes involve shooting a herd of 1,500 buffalo.

Visual effects watchdog Nicholas Brooks stated that to create a heavenly view, another world of Sky Woman in "Legend of She Crosses the Water and the Thunder Spirit", the filmmakers decided not to film the actors against the blue screen. Instead, the color and texture of the scene is then changed, sometimes in a somewhat arbitrary manner controlled by the computer, which Brooks says lends a certain sequence of psychological feelings.
