History

Safari is an off-road vehicle of various Tata's tailor-made for the most developed markets such as Europe, in fact unlike Tata's remaining range, it presents innovative and modern solutions and that's why it's soon appreciated in Italy and in the local market.

Tata's range in the nineties saw expansion into new markets and that's why more advanced new models were introduced such as Indica, a small city car with 3.70 meters and Safari, an exceptional off-road dedicated exclusively to dirt roads. Safari has been designed as a comfortable seven-seat seater with a third row of folded, spacious interiors and a very powerful engine; in the market it has positioned itself as an alternative to competitive prices for other real off-road vehicles, such as Mitsubishi Pajero, Toyota Land Cruiser and Hyundai Galloper.

The definitive car was presented in 1998 in India and imports in Europe took place in the same year. The Safari is powered by the same engine used in Tata Telcoline, a 2.0-liter turbodiesel unit of Peugeot XD88 with a power of 87 PS (64 kW). It comes with a five-speed manual synchromesh advanced gearbox, with a 4WD option and a 235/75x15 tire. Compared to the Indian model, Safari Europe presents several changes, especially the richest accessory to meet the needs of European customers, different color bumpers compared to other body parts to make the appearance more modern. Safari name adopted to emphasize the quality of off-road vehicles, especially calls for attacks are also underlined by the presence of an external backup wheel (applied to the truck). In fact, the car was also designed for use on the road, a gentle aesthetic ending the idea of off-road spartan and squat vehicles. Safari is 4.65 meters long from one bumper to the other but the presence of an outer spare wheel increases the size up to 4.81 meters. The vehicle weight is 1,920 kg (4,230Â £ lb) for the 2WD version, adding an extra 110kg (240 lb) for the 4WD variant.

Evolution

During the commercial life of the model, various aesthetic and mechanical updates were presented: in 2005 an important facelift was presented which saw the adoption of new bumper shields, new optical groups and chrome grille, new interiors and rear redesigns with unpublished graphics lights. New Borg Warner transmission unit and revised braking system. The engine adopted by the 2005 version is a new four-cylinder four-liter diesel diesel engine with 116Ã,® PS (85 kW) at 3000 rpm and 300Ã, N? M (221Ã, lbf? Ft) of torque between 1600 and 2000 rpm. The 3.0 liter comes from the commercial Mercedes-Benz engine used in Tata 407 then upgraded.

In December 2006, at the Bologna Motor Show, further updates saw the adoption of a 2.2-liter common rail diesel engine from the PSA Group and reviewed with AVL support. The 2.2 is Euro 4 and replaces the previous unit in our market while in India the 3.0 liter remains in production. The updated model went on sale during the spring of 2007.

In 2010 the aesthetic facelift introduces new chrome grille, new interior trim, new interior instrumentation with wooden inserts for center console and new body color.

Chassis

Safari uses Telcoline Tata X2's body-on-frame body platform with rear axle which is redesigned and reinforced to match off-road usage with part-time all-wheel drive with a traction system in off-road situations only with the system electrical control grafting of up to 60 km/h, self-locking rear differential and manual block front block, then removed for fully automatic solution). The front suspension is a double swinging trapezium and torque rod, while a rigid bridge system with five tensile arms and coil springs has been adopted at the rear. The front brake is a ventilated discotheque that is combined backwards which is a drum adjustment. The braking system is an ABS ABS braking system plus EBD electronic brake power distribution from the second series called EX2 (first series, EX version not equipped with ABS-EBD and equipped with full disc brakes instead of self-ventilating).

Machine

The engine of the first version is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel (1948 cc effective), fitted with an indirect injection and a KKK turbocharger with two valves per cylinder distribution capable of delivering 92 horsepower Euro 2. This engine comes from Peugeot XD88 units built under license by Tata in India and used by Tata Telcoline and Sierra. With Euro 3 standard strength reduced to 87 horsepower.

A 2.1 liter 16V petrol engine was added in 2003. It is a straight-4 naturally aspirated developed by Tata Motors and AVL that sends 135 horsepower. In 2005, 2.1 liter was discontinued.

Engine 3.0 Dicor (short for Direct injection common rail ) is the first direct injection diesel engine installed by Indian firm, a modern four-cylinder engine (derived from a Mercedes-Benz commercial unit) , with common rail injection and sixteen valve distribution. It delivers a maximum power of 116 hp (85 kW) and complies with Euro 3 regulations. The maximum torque is 300 Nm sent between 1,600 and 2,000 rpm. Diesel Dicor 3.0 was removed from the European price list in 2007 with the inclusion of the 2.2 Dicor machine but for the overseas market, production 3.0 continues as it has found a strong and elastic machine though some horsepower in relation to displacement.

The 2.2 Dicor engine (based on PSA Group unit 2,179 cc DW12, reviewed by Austrian firm AVL and manufactured in India) is always 16V four cylinder with common rail direct injection and intercooler, generating 140 hp (103 kW) with maximum torque of 320 NÃ,m available between 1,700 and 2,700 rpm. The new engine delivers some more horsepower than the previous unit but lower consumption than in the past: the Tata mix cycle represents 7.7 liters for 100 km, with an average emission of 205 grams of carbon dioxide emitted per km. Machine 2.2 Dicor is the first approved Euro 4.
