History

The Rolling Rock Club was originally the 12,000 acre (4,900 ha) land owned by Judge Thomas Mellon, who handed it over to his son Richard Beatty Mellon, brother of Andrew Mellon and former president of Mellon Bank. Richard Beatty Mellon turned Rolling Rock into a rustic retreat for his friends and family for hunting, fishing and cycling. From here it continues to evolve into an establishment that, in addition to the usual country club requirements - swimming pools and golf courses - also boasting stocked trout fish, duck ponds, game birds and range of fire. The Club also housed a group of English fox dogs, raising birds, and running the Gold Cup Steeplechase (from 1933 to 1983). RB Mellon left the land to his son, Richard King Mellon, when he died in 1933. In the mid-20th century, the Rolling Rock Club hunted over 75,000 acres (30,000 hectares), mostly owned by 240 farmers who are Mellon 18,000 hectares.

The club opened nine new holes in May 1997. With only two water dangers in the form of environmentally sensitive areas, there are many sand bunkers. The greens are bumpy, and the fairways are tree lined.
