Riding Instructor Career Overview â€
src: www.animalcareerexpert.com

A horseman instructor is a person whose job is to teach horse riding (and horse care) methods for beginners and to improve the style and techniques of intermediate and advanced riders. Horse instructors can also serve as trainers for riders in competition. Some instructors may work outside of their own equestrian facilities, others at riding schools or training centers. With appropriate academic credentials, some can teach in college or college equestrian courses. Yet others are freelance and travel from stable to stable.

Accreditation

In most parts of the world, there are no formal requirements or licenses for horse instructors. However, in the UK and in most of Europe, there are bodies that are recognized as accredited bodies to provide qualifications. The International Group for Horse Qualification provides membership for many agencies and federations from around the world. Instructors from member countries may hold International Passport Training - granted by IGEQ - allowing them to demonstrate that equivalent instructional qualifications have been obtained.

Other countries, such as Australia and South Africa, have professional qualifications offered by awarding bodies or federations for their instructors: the Australian Equestrian Federation and the South African Equestrian Federation. In the United Kingdom, the British Horse Society (BHS) and the Association of British Equestrian Schools (ABRS) certify instructors. In the UK it is very difficult to get any professional insurance as a freelance instructor without getting a professional qualification. While undergoing training to become an instructor they are trained at school and horse improvement. These instructors may be included in the BHS Instructor List and will therefore be recognized as maintaining their training standards by conducting regular training courses and updating their training records.

USA System

In the United States, there is no official or licensing criteria necessary for an individual to become an equestrian instructor. However, private organizations such as the American Riding Instructors Association (ARIA) offer testing and certification that can help horse instructors gain credibility in horse riding communities and often help reduce the cost of liability insurance. Groups like the American American Riding for Disability Association also provide specialized training that allows instructors who teach horse-riding therapy to get reimbursement from health insurance and other programs. Some competitive organizations such as the US Dressage Federation also have instructor training and certification programs.
