Racing Career

2016: season two years

Practical Joke started his career in 6 Special Weight Furry Angels at Saratoga on August 6th. He was sent as a 5-12 favorite driven by Irad Ortiz Jr.. Leaving the gate, he met another horse and was near the back of the pack down the backstretch. He widened in turn and began closing quickly at the early leader, then pulled in stretch to win by 5 long.

He then entered Hope Stakes on September 9 where he was a 2-1 second choice in field six behind the Classic Empire. Driven by Jose Ortiz, he sits behind his rucksack behind a slow initial pace, then swings wide around the corner. In the stretch, he fights with Royal Copy and Pretty Boy Flash but edges away at the end of the last round to win with the neck. Ortiz said after the race, "He ran all the way, he gave me a big foot change when I caught him clearly but the other two horses were in front and they kept fighting a bit, and as soon as he put his head in front he kept walking.

The win was very satisfying for coach Chad Brown, a coach with a good reputation with fillies and grass horses, but who has never won a Grade I race with a horse on the ground. "This is really a dream come true", says Brown. "It was a great moment for me and my staff... It was great to train him, the first race I thought he ran well and for the second time he went back to the big race."

The final preparation of a practical Joke for the Juvenile Breeders' Cup is the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park on October 8th. He is second choice 5-2 behind Syndergaard on 9-5. Now driven by Joel Rosario, he breaks awkwardly and looks down at the tracks, then sits down the middle of the road. He makes his moves around the turn and in stretching him even with Syndergaard and dueling to the wire to win heads swinging with his nose in a time of 1: 34,68. It was the fourth fastest Champagne Champion in the history of the race. Rosario said after the race, "He's a bit awkward on the inside and I have to use him a bit through the parachute. He looked around and took a little time to get back the race but he was fine after that They will be very fast ahead but it seems more and more distance which he gets to run in a better direction. For a moment when I get to another horse (Syndergaard) he waits a bit.He is still a young horse if anything but looks good in the future. "

Breeders' Cup Juvenile is held at the Santa Anita racing track on November 5th. Practical Joke is one of several horses with a 7-1 chance in a highly competitive field of thirteen which includes Class I Klimt (Del Mar Futurity) winners, Gormley (FrontRunner) and the Breeders' Futurity. At rest, Practical Joke meets Not This Time, then sits in the middle of the pack. At the far corner, he tilted out and pulled to third place but finished more than seven long behind the Classic Empire and Not Now.

2017: three-year season

Practical Joke started this year as one of the top-ranking colts for Kentucky Derby 2017, despite concerns expressed about the lack of influence of stamina in its pedigree. He made his first start of 2017 at the Fountain of Youth Stakes on March 4 at Gulfstream Park. After settling in the middle of the pack during the initial run, Practical Joke moved into a lead around the distant corner but was passed in stretch by Gunnevera. Brown is pleased with his performance, believing that Practical Joke requires the race.

Practical Joke made the next start at Blue Grass Stakes on April 8 at Keeneland racetrack. He made a sustained ascent on the stretch and finished just three quarters of the length behind Irap, with highly regarded McCraken three behind in third. Despite concerns over Practical Joke's stamina, Brown is very optimistic about the prospect of a horse in Derby. "Maybe this is the year we want to take a shot because we have a horse that has points [earned on 2017 Road to Kentucky Derby], and he defended his run."

Kentucky Derby was held on May 6th on a fast-track track at Churchill Downs. Practical Joke draw pos positions 19 but the Rosary was able to guide him to the rails to save the ground around the first corner. At the final turn, Practical Joke moved outside and made a strong run to advance to fourth in the middle before exhausting slightly and finishing fifth. Brown is pleased with the effort, saying, "He got a great journey from that post... He's a good racehorse, he can not go that far, but he's struggling and trying."

Brown gave the horse a layoff then entered him at Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park on July 8 where he made 4-5 favorites. Practical Joke is rated in the fourth position behind the early pacemaker, but is trapped inside as they enter the stretch. Swung wide by Rosario, he finally found the racing room and quickly withdrew to win with two turns. Brown is happy. "He really ran well today, I definitely think it was the best race he ever won."

On July 30, Practical Joke made his next start at Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park, where he faced a high-quality field that included longtime rivals McCraken, Belmont Stakes runner-up Irish War Cry and winner of Santa Anita Derby Girvin. After being hit in the beginning, the Practical Joke judged in the middle of the pack is left behind by McCraken and Girvin. Turning to the stretch, McCraken made his move and unlocked a long lead while Practical Joke and Girvin began to close outside. In the finished photo, Girvin wins over McCraken with a nose with Practical Joke just halfway behind in third.

On August 26th, Practical Joke begins at H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stadium at Saratoga Race Course. He drew a post 1 and was driven back by the Rosary. He broke the serve well and settled on the back of the field, as Takaful set the pace. Rosario began asking for Practical Joke to go around the last round, and Practical Joke let go of a sustained rally, winning by 1 1/4 length with a time of 1: 21.96 for seven furlongs. With that victory, Practical Joke achieved a first-class victory of his career. Brown stated after the race: "To cut back to seven-eight after a difficult race at Haskell, I am very proud of this horse. This is the third race in seven weeks.

Practical Joke performs the next start at the Dirt Mile's Dirt Mix Breeders Cup on Del Mar on November 3rd. Unfortunately he pulled the outer post position, a huge loss within two miles. He breaks slowly and tilts to the tracks to save ground on the first corner. Under the backstretch, he ran near the back of the field, then began to make a position around the second bend. With a quarter of a mile remaining, he swung wide and closed the stretch, finishing fourth.

The last start of Practical Joke is in Cigar Mile on December 2nd at Aqueduct. He settled on the back of the pack, more than 12 long behind the fast start speed. Around the distant bend, he moved wide and circled the field to make the ground but still finished well behind the third Sharp Azteca and Mind Your Biscuits. "It's hard to make land today on this track," Brown commented. "That said, the winner is very impressive, and I do not think it will be a matter of how the track is playing; it looks like no one will beat him today."
