Mississippi Canyon

The Mississippi Canyon is a submarine gorge, part of the Mississippi Submarine Valley in the central-Central Mexico Gulf, south of Louisiana. According to the US Geological Survey Program, GLORIA Mapping Program, this is a dominant feature in the north-central Mexico Gulf. According to GCAGS Transactions, it has an average width of 8 kilometers (5.0 million), and a length of 120 kilometers (75 mi). The US Mineral Management Service (MMS) applies the Mississippi Canyon name to the federal number of oil and gas rental blocks in large offshore areas centered on, but mostly beyond, the submarine gorge.

According to the "Deepwater Gulf of Mexico 2004: American Expanding Frontier", a report issued by the Gulf Coast OCS Mineral Management Services (MMS), from ten deep-sea discoveries over 7,000 feet (2,134 m) deep, three were in the Mississippi Canyon: Aconcagua project, area/block MC305, 7,379 ft (2,249 m) deep; and the Camden Hills project, MC348, 7,530 ft (2,300 m) deep, both found in 1999; and the Blind Faith project, MC696, 7,116 ft (2,169 m) deep, was discovered in 2001. In a separate section of the same report, records were made of acreage in the Thunder Horse project, MC778, obtained in 1988. Other projects noted for Mississippi Canyon including the Thunder Horse/MC775-778 and MC819-822 blocks, are listed as a complete grid of PEA (environmental assessment program) by BP.

Five of the top 20 Gulf of Mexico marine bays of production for 2000-01 are in Mississippi Canyon, including the top 2: the Mars Project, 2,933 feet (894 m) deep, 137 million barrels (21.8 ÃÆ'â € 10 ⁶ m ³ ) of equivalent oil (BOE); the Ursa project, 3,800 feet (1,200 m) deep, 93 million barrels (14.8 ÃÆ'â € 10 ^ ⁶ m ³ ) from BOE; Mensa project, 5,280 feet (1,610 m), 27 million barrels (4.3 ÃÆ'â € " 10 ^ ⁶ m ³ ) of the BOE; Cognac, 1,023 feet (312 m), 23 million barrels (3.7 ÃÆ'â € " 10 ^ < soup> 6 3 ) from BOE; Crosby, 4,259 feet (1.298 m), 18 million barrels (2.9 ÃÆ'â € 10 ^ ⁶ m ³ ) of the BOE, all managed by Shell.

Deepwater Horizon blast

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, located at MMS Mississippi Canyon, block 252, which is about 40 miles (64 km) off the coast of Louisiana, underwent a catastrophic explosion; it sank a day and a half later. Although initial reports indicate that relatively little oil has leaked, on 27 April it was stated by BP that about 5,000 barrels (790 m ³ ) of oil per day were removed from the wellbore, 1-mile (1.6 Ã , Km) below the surface on the ocean floor. The rapidly expanding oil layer extends to cover hundreds of square miles of ocean surface, posing a threat to marine life and adjacent coastal wetlands. On June 10, the Level Flow Group of the Deepwater Horizon Joint Incident Information Center reported that it had determined that the estimated flow rate of the unregulated wellhead was 20,000 barrels (3,200 m ^{3 ) up to 40,000 barrels (6,400 m 3 ) per day.}
