The Indian Chief is a motorcycle built by the Hendee Manufacturing Company and the Indian Motocycle Company from 1922 to the end of the company's production in 1953. The chairman is a "twin brother" of India, a larger motorcycle more stronger than the more agile Scouts used in competitions and equestrian sports.

When India restarted civilian production after World War II, they only revived the Chief line. The production of Indian motorcycles ended with the last Chief made in 1953.

Origin

The head was introduced for 1922 to replace the Powerplus, although Powerplus continued under the name "Standard" until 1923. Designed by Charles B. Franklin, the Chief has a similar design feature to the earlier Scout Franklin, including a gearbox bolted to the engine casing and the main drive with a dental gear. The head has a hole of 3 1 / 8 inch (79 mm) and stroke 3 31 / 32 inch (101 mm), providing 61 cubic inch displacement, such as Powerplus/Standard have. Unlike the Powerplus/Standard, Chief is not offered with rear suspension.

Big Chief was introduced for 1923. Big Chief's machine got bored for 1 / 4 inch (83 mm) and is stroked to 4 / 16 inch (113 mm), giving a displacement of 74 cubic inches. Big Chief has mainly been offered for used sidecar, but is popular with solo riders as well. Development

For 1940, the main frame was modified to include the rear suspension of the plunger. In the same year, all Indian models were fixed with large and decorative fenders.

Indian 340-B is a military motorcycle based on Chief. 340-B has an open fender and is usually supplied with a sidecar. Customers include US. military, which received about 3,000, and France, who received 5,000 before surrendering to Germany in 1940.

Post-war

After World War II, the Chief was the only pre-war Indian model to be produced. Trailing-link leaf-emerging fork used before the war was replaced by a girder fork similar to that used by the 841 military and Sport Scout.

No Heads were made for 1949. Head back to the lineup for 1950, with telescopic forks replacing the girder fork and with the engine stroking to 80Ã, cuÃ, at (1.300Ã, cc). Head production ended in 1953, when India stopped producing motorcycles.

Brockhouse

In 1959, Brockhouse Engineering, the owner of the Indian trademark and distribution network, sold Royal Enfield Meteor that had been reforested as an Indian Chief.

1999-2013

The Indian Motorcycle Company of America (IMCA) produced Indian Chief motorcycles in Gilroy, California, from 1999 to 2003. The clone was originally used for Harley-Davidson Evolution engines built from the S & amp; S. The newer version uses the "Powerplus" engine in-house.

A new company started production of Indian Chiefs in 2006 in King's Mountain, North Carolina. This is the latest version of IMCA Head. Head Production was transferred to Spirit Lake, Iowa, after Polaris Industries bought the company.
