French Creek is a disjointed stream located in the Black Hills region in western South Dakota, USA. This is a tributary of the Cheyenne River.
It rises about 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Custer, South Dakota and extends for a length of 62 miles (100 km). It flows eastward in general through Custer State Park and empties into the Cheyenne River near Red Shirt, South Dakota. It flows throughout the year, but in dry periods low water flows into underground drainage near the eastern border of Custer State Park and never reaches Cheyenne.
French Creek is most likely named for the early trap ancestors. Gold was discovered in French Creek during an expedition led by George Armstrong Custer in 1874. This discovery triggered the Black Hills gold rush in the late 1870s.
