Blue Mustang , known by locals with the nickname Blucifer , is a mustang-fiberglass sculpture located at the Airport Denver International. Bright blue, with bright red eyes, very famous both for his striking appearance and for having killed his creator, Luis JimÃÆ'à © nez when some of it fell on him in his studio.
Blue Mustang was one of the earliest public art commissions for the Denver International Airport in 1993. The statue was based on an eight-foot statue of MesteÃÆ' à ± o (Mustang), on display at University of Oklahoma. Standing at a height of 32 feet (9.8 m) and weighing 9,000 pounds (4,100 kg) including its steel armature, the Blue Mustang is located on the median PeÃÆ' à ± a Boulevard. JimÃÆ'à © nez was killed in 2006 at the age of 65 when creating a statue when his head fell on his body and severed an artery in his leg. At the time of his death, JimÃÆ'à © nez has completed a mustang head painting. The statue is complemented by the help of artist, family and professional racer staff Camillo NuÃÆ' à ± ez and Richard LaVato. Once finished the statue was sent to California to be assembled and then sent to Denver. Blue Mustang was inaugurated at Denver International Airport on February 11, 2008.
The statue is widely belittled and defended. In 2009, Denver's real estate developer, Rachel Hultin, attracted media attention when he launched a Facebook page against the Blue Mustang.
