Description and history

The building was known in the 19th century when the Black Horse Tavern stood on the north side of Searsport Avenue (Route 1 of the United States), near the mouth of the Passagassawakeag River and between Old Searsport Avenue and Stephenson Lane. It is a wooden house frame 1-1/2 Cape style house, five wide bays, with a saddle roof roof, a central chimney, walled boards, and foundation stone. Its main facade is facing east, and the main entrance, located in the center, has no trim. A single story ell, a 20th-century substitute for the older ell, extends northward, with two pointed roofs projecting from the roof. The interior of the main house is well maintained, with wide pine leaflets, large fireplaces in both front rooms, with a simple vertical partition board on the back. Original doors and frames are still used generally.

The house was built around 1795 by Jerome Stephenson, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War who moved to Belfast in 1784. Stephenson stands out in local civil affairs, serving as a voter in 1785. Although he built a home for his family, he turned it into a shop in 1800 , the roles that are met below are son and grandchild, until about 1852. The marks used to identify the store are now kept at home.
