History

The first race was recorded in Bath in 1728. In 1811, the first major gathering at Racecourse Mandi was held, under the auspices of a local family, Blathwayts. Initially there was only one meeting in a year in the course, which lasted for two days, but gradually over the years, the number of meetings increased to the current level of twenty-two. In the early years, the Somerset Stakes were the main race of the calendar, and the race is still held every year. There were a number of tribune buildings in those days and people used to watch races from their cars, lined up beside the track.

During World War II, the racetrack was used as a landing field by the Royal Air Force and was named RAF North Stoke.

In 1953, Racecourse Bath was the location of a criminal plot that surrounds the "Spa selling plate". Having two horses that look almost identical, the gang replaces a good horse with a poor horse. They are betting heavily on replaced horses and damaging power supplies to the racetrack, preventing bets altering the remaining chances in 10-1. The horse wins the race and the gang will gain a fortune as no racist officials become suspicious and are summoned to Scotland Yard. The gang was then taken to court.

In 2015/16, the racetrack facility underwent significant development and investment programs, funded by the Racing Company. The racetrack has a new look with French buttermilk and gray ribbons, revamped parade rings and Beckford Bar opened. Langridge Grandstand recently opened in July 2016 and has a range of new facilities including a canopied roof garden from which the races can be watched. It is also available as a venue between racing days for corporate events, dinners and weddings.
