Plot
In 1949, the old grandfather of the young cowboy John Grady Cole died. John grew up on his grandfather's ranch, but was sold for sale when the old man died. Her mother had no ties to her anymore, and preferred to have money. Without home, John asks his friend Lacey Rawlins to leave his family farm in San Angelo, Texas and join him to travel on horseback across the 150-mile border to the south, looking for a job in Mexico. They met a 13-year-old boy named Jimmy Blevins on their way to Mexico, which they were friends with but from whom they separated. Then they meet a young noble princess, Alejandra Villarreal, with whom Cole falls in love.
Cole and Rawlins became the ones hired for Alejandra's father, who liked their work, but Cole's romantic interest in Alejandra was not welcomed by her wealthy aunt. After Alejandra's father took him away, Cole and Rawlins were arrested by Mexican police and taken to jail, where they met again with Blevins, accused of stealing horses and murder, and being killed by a corrupt police captain. Cole and Rawlins were sent to a Mexican prison for conspiring with the crime of Blevins, in which they had to defend themselves against dangerous prisoners. Both were almost killed.
Auntie Alejandra frees Cole and Rawlins, on condition that she never sees them again. While Rawlins returns to his parents' farm in Texas, Cole tries to reunite with Alejandra over his family's objections. Cole then sets out to take revenge on the captain who takes the life of Blevins boys, as well as to regain, the horses of Lacey and Blevins. After making the captain as a prisoner, he handed it over to the Mexicans, including one with whom Cole previously shared a cell when they were imprisoned by the captain. Cole waived the decision to kill the captain, but implied those whom the captain submitted for would do that.
Log back into the US and drive through a small town in Texas, pulling two horses behind the horse he was riding, he stopped to ask what day it was (it was Thanksgiving Day). He asked some men whether they would be interested in buying a gun, because he needed money. One of them was a sheriff's deputy and caught him because the three horses had different brands, and they suspected Cole was a horse thief.
In court, Cole told the judge his story from the beginning. The judge trusted him and ordered Cole freed and the horses returned to him. That night, Cole appeared at the judge's house, in trouble. The judge had said good things about him in court, but Cole felt guilty that Blevins was killed - and while there was nothing he could do to prevent the killing, he never even spoke at the time and was angry with himself for it. The judge told him that he was too hard on himself and that could not be helped; he must go on and live his life. Cole rides to the Rawlins family farm, where he asks his friend if he wants his horse back.

The version Thornton gave Miramax over three hours. Harvey Weinstein demanded that the film be reduced to under two hours and also get rid of the original music score by Daniel Lanois, after Marty Stuart succeeded him.
Peter Biskind suggested in his book Down and Dirty Pictures (2004) that the demand for cutting the length of the film was at least partially done in retaliation for Thornton's refusal to cut Sling Blade (1996).
Thornton cuts have an effect on storytelling. Matt Damon publicly criticized Weinstein's decision, told Entertainment Weekly, "You can not cut 35% of the movie and expect the movie to be the same."
