Life
A. F. Tschiffely was born in an old Swiss family in Bern in 1895 where he was educated and became a teacher. An adventurer at heart, he left Switzerland to teach in England in his early 20s, but found a new passion as a football player and professional boxer. He then moved to Buenos Aires where he settled to teach again, at St. George's College, Quilmes, and then as the temporary schoolmaster of the English High School of Buenos Aires, but still find time on long vacations for adventure horseback riding and exploring the surrounding pampas.
He made lots of friends among the breeders and learned a lot about horses and trips outside. In 1925, at the age of thirty, he decided to travel on horseback from Buenos Aires to Washington DC. At that time (and even to this day) most will assume this can not be done. The newspaper at that time declared "Impossible! Absurd! The man must be angry!". She writes about her travels in a bestseller titled Southern Cross to Pole Star, The Ride or Tschiffely's Ride where she tells three epics. journey of 1925-1928 on two original Criollo horses named Mancha (meaning Spot ) and Gato (meaning Cats ), direct breeds of horses were brought to Argentina by conquistador Pedro de Mendoza in 1535 , the first horse brought to the new world. These horses were the best Spanish stock, at the time, the best in Europe, which had become wild on the pampas. They are legendary for their toughness, intelligence and stamina.
After Ride Tschiffely became a famous successful writer and moved with his wife Violet to London where he continues to write more books, one of which is the biography of his friend Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham who died in 1936. In 1937 he returned to South America and made another trip, by car, to the southern tip of the continent, recording his experience among the natives and the changes brought about by modernity in This Way Southward (1940).
Tschiffely has inspired many people, over five generations, to try to follow his footsteps.
